p.1 #1 · Star Trail

Hello,

This is my first try at a Star Trail. I know it isn't long enough, but the sky turned grey after this due to clouds.

I apreciate comments and sugestions on how to master this technique and how to treat the photos in PS after this.

What i did in PS for this one was add contrast (a lot) and a little brightness.

The orange light is from city lights.

Shutter 885 sec
Ap F6.3
Lens Canon 10-22
Canon 30D
ISO 100

Not trying to be a smart a** and perhaps too literal, but I don't see any stars? Perhaps my monitor?

Beautiful image but the stars are too faint.
Dust on sensor left lower section, below the darkening oranges.

Thanks scot, i noticed that dust. Must remember to clean it next time.

I do know the stars are too faint...but how do i improve that?

It's nicely composed with the tree, but I suggest you go to a darker location and shoot wide open with longer exposures, and you could try slightly higher ISOs, maybe 200. I can barely see any stars, to tell you the truth.

I second Dpic_arctic. More exp time, higher Iso, which will require being further from light pollution.

Another method is to do multiple shorter exposures, and then stack them. You'll get less ambient light building up in each of the shorter shots, and still get longer trails.

Ahh, calibrated monitor at home - now I see them. I do like the effect of the tree - good luck with the ambient light.

I like the color and the character of the tree. Others have offered helpful comments about the stars.
