p.1 #1 · A Few Nightscapes

Hello,

Here are a few images I shot this weekend. I'm still trying to learn and get down the basics of shooting at night, but I was fairly happy with these two. Probably should have used ISO 1600 as there is a little star movement...hard to see in web version. Any comments on the images are appreciated.

Take care,
Ansley

#1 Friday-shot after moon had risen
5D, 17-40, f/8 @ 36 mm, 37s, ISO 800

#2 Saturday-shot about 1 hour after sunset
5D, 70-200, f/4 @ 70 mm, 30s, ISO 800

Added 1 more...

#3 Simulated 54 minute exposure. Will have to try Floris's technique to eliminate gaps between the exposures.

I especially like #2 where the fg dead tree is lit in a similar color to the sky.

Hi Ansley, the tree makes a fine compositional element, but perhaps a bit less emphasis and maybe leverage the reflection as well Thanks for sharing your experiments.

Hugh,

I see what you mean. Probably painting the in the reflection would have added to the scene. Maybe not such a direct strong beam--more faint than the direct beam on the tree. Will have to keep that in mind next time.

These are pretty cool, but I would like to see the first two with the lit tree's reflection intact.

Love the third one, although it would be cool to see the entire reflection and if the light was a bit more red so it would look like the sky.

Excellent work. Interesting and very well captured. The third one is my favorite.

Thanks Barry,

It looks kinda weird with the trunk like that, but there are lily pads all around the pond. The pads did not pick up the light like the tree and water did...something to think about in the future though.

Hey Milan,

Thanks for your suggestion. I will try and adjust the red/orange hue of the tree to see if I can get a more closer match to the sky.

Hi Javier,

Thanks for your comments. Kinda trying new and different things....I was happy with the results. Each time I try and shoot at night I learn more and get more comfortable.

Take care,
Ansley
