p.1 #1 · Presetopia FTW

I just wanted to say thanks to Spencer Boerup for making Presetopia. If you haven't purchased it already, go do it.
LINKY: http://www.presetopia.com/

Some have said 'you can make your own presets' or 'you can download free presets' - these are both true statements. But you won't get this many useful presets, in a well-organized and thought-out format for free, or without weeks of tweaking and doing it yourself...

The reason I'm posting this is that I shot an engagement session and a wedding that I wasn't very excited about editing, and normally it would have taken me days to figure out how I wanted to get the images to look and get the most out of them. Thanks to Presetopia, I was able to quickly preview a ton of different options and get my images in the ballpark of where I wanted them before going to town with my adjustment brushes and other random tweaks to achieve my final look...

Presetopia has quickly become an indispensable part of my Lightroom workflow. As the man himself says, work smarter, not harder.

/This is an unpaid advertisement for Presetopia by a very happy photographer and real customer.

I've spent some time looking it over, but I can't figure out which (if any) pieces would be useful without Lightroom. Would they be just as useful if you only had Camera Raw & Photoshop?

If you're not using Lightroom, then I HIGHLY recommend that as well. It has completely changed the way I work with my files, and I've become a better photographer for it. If you haven't tried LR, download the 30-day trial.

I can't imagine using Camera Raw + Photoshop like I used to do at this point. You can just do SO MUCH in LR.

there is a set of actions and a set of presets, phyl. actions are for PS, presets are for LR. choose what is best for you.

I have both sets of Presetopia presets....

I do have a question about them. I find that most of them present their "look" too strongly for my taste... so then I have to go in and do a bunch of adjustments anyway which means that I am not really saving time by using them.

Is their a quick way to dial down the intensity of some of them? Like when you do an action you can dictate at what percentage you want that particular look...

If you use the PS actions, I think you can change the opacity of the looks. Personally, I've just found that certain presets that look way overdone for some images tend to look really close to right with some other images. But you can always create your own tweaked versions of those presets if you want to get them to the one-click point and you're not happy with them as-is.

I'd like to know too. Something like opacity in Photoshop that works in Lightroom would be perfect.

No.. you can't. At least I'm pretty sure you can't. And if you aren't using LR, I'd highly recommend you give it a try. I'd also recommend you pick up Scott Kelby's LR 2 book so you can get a firm understanding of all the great tings LR can do for you.

You guys are aware that once you make your changes... you can save those as your own preset, right?

So you run the presetopia preset, then dial it down and make adjustments as you see fit and save it as your own preset... and actually, you've already done it the work. You can go back to any picture you've done this too and save the preset right now.... you don't lose your history with a file when you close, so you can do it now.

Thanks Richard. I'll be the first to admit that I have learned LR on the fly during this busy season. This winter I'm going to try to learn a lot more about it and Spencer's presets will definitely help me by giving me a good start with certain looks.

Incorrect! While you CANNOT use LR presets with Bridge, Presetopia includes LR Presets & ACR/Bridge settings as well. I believe these are the only commercially available presets that include both LR and ACR/Bridge presets. Not to mention PS Actions to further add to the list.

mineymole, there is no easy way to adjust the "intensity", for example, layer opacity in PS. I will admit, some of the presets (very few in fact) are on the extreme side. They will look extreme depending on your exposures. If you nail your exposures, they will look great. If you overexpose, then they might appear too bright. Underexpose, you might lose the blacks. But, if you want to send me feedback I don't mind addressing any issues that might be arising if people tell me about them. I'm not leaving anyone high and dry

I agree, I bought both of the sets a while ago and they are pure gold. Had a wedding to edit I was also not too hyped up about and presetopia helped me find my groove, Some favorites of mine are Midnight BW, and Milk Chocolate. For those of you not using lightroom, I too highly recommend it, coming from aperture was like a giant breath of fresh air for me. I will recommend Luminous Landscapes video tutorial on Lightroom 2, as it helped me a great deal understand the undercarriage of the machine. Thanks again spencer from another FM lurker almost not busy enough to start posting regularly

I just shot a wedding so i am going to give the presetopia a run.
So far loving the B&W.

Lightroom 2 reference book: Martin Evening - lightroom 2 is another reference book.
nice detail on why or how items work in the different modules.

so far loving Lightroom 3 beta. You can see a difference between the raw engines between LR2 and LR3beta.

Love the Presetopia presets. So does my family, they actually get to see me once in a while now since the presets made my editing so much faster.
If you click a preset and it is to strong hit the AUTO adjustment and it usually comes right into line or pretty close....works for me....
