p.1 #1 · Car phot-op question

I belong to an old car club that is planning a yearly meet for year after next.

We'd like to stir up interest in our cars and have discussed having some kind of photo op for the public, specifically by making cars available in different interesting locations arouind the lovely town we will be in. We are thinking of cars A and B at the Smith mansion from 8:00 to 10:00, cars C and D in the park from 10-12, E & F by the courthouse etc for most of the day. We will do what we can to put the cars in a scene where the light works as well as possible, and the photogs can move some of the cars (the owner will actually move them....)

It may be possible to have one or two that people can get inside--probably a convertible or two, but most will have anxious owners nearby. Some of these cars are valued at as much as $200-300,000 and have been painstakingly restored; I don't see them being mauled by children with ice cream cones.

We might have a modest photo contest with winning pictures posted on the web.

How can we make this a better event?

Maybe the better question is how can make it an event

Nobody likes to shoot classic cars? Where am I off here?

First, I'd think if all the cars were in one location it would draw more of a crowd. Secondly, do you believe there are that many people where you live that want to take pictures of those cars?

There are a lot of cities that do "Cars & Coffee" meets on Saturday morning where lots (upwards of 100 or more) very expensive, and or unique cars are all together in one parking lot. They usually aren't parked with the photographer in mind though, and yes, sometimes there are some little ones with ice cream cones wandering the lot.

The obvious is that if you want people to come, it's location, location, location, and advertising. Not necessarily in that order. Good luck with it, sounds like fun.

Understood.

We just thought that having a few cars in each of five or six really nice locations with decent light instead of crowds of cars jammed together in a parking lot might be an interesting alternative. Dunno about the convenience of the location, tho......

I would agree with you from a photographer's standpoint, but from that of the general public, I believe most people would prefer to have everything in one location, instead of having to go to multiple locations, fighting traffic, finding a parking spot, etc.
