I nearly tried the Tam 24-135 on your recommendation Cogi but I read a few pretty sad reviews on it -eg that it falls behind the 24-105L- so I decided to go with that other little darling in your kit, the EF 28-70 3.5-4.5 II.
It lags a little behind the 28-70L in absolute resolution but I reckon it will do pretty nicely on 5D. I'm particularly keen on how even the sharpness is and how it doesnt really have a weak end, its just nice and solid end to end - well I hope mine will be lol. Yet to recieve it!
I actually re-discovered the old 50-200 L but it is also a bit of a bohemoth so it also kind of loses out for travel. Nice colour rendition on it though.
What really annoys me is that the lenses I need/want for my income-generating photography are polar opposites to the lenses i want for travel, and owning both is not feasible :\ Although, from what I can gather, small businesses in Australia are currently eligible for an EXTRA 50% tax break on purchases over $1k (can be a cumulative purchase of multiple cheaper same-ish things) in addition to the usual 30%... to bad I'm not registered yet!
hmm...time to hit up some business-owning contacts. The math on a 70-200L, 35L, 1DSIII and about 4 580EXII's looks pretty good to me
Yes, I am sure the 24-105 L is better, and for $1000 (compared to about $200) it should be. It is also significantly larger and heavier than the Tamron. For a lens I use maybe 2 times a year, I simply could never justify owning the 24-105L, and I would never appreciate the extra weight and size on those two days. Distortion at the wide end is better controlled on the Tamron, and I tend to use the wide end of it quite a bit. On those two days a year when I need it, I just set it at f8 and forget it. The results at f8 are more than adequate throughout the entire range, for the intended purposes. The Tamron would more fairly be compared to the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS, and in that case the Tamron has several strong points that many might prefer over the Canon. Photozone found a lot of CA in their copy of the Tamron. I don't see nearly that much in mine...
I think you'll really enjoy the 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 II. When I don't need the extra range of the Tamron and I want to travel even lighter, it is my go-to lens. You are right about it being very solid from end-to-end, and it is so tiny and light. Its only major drawback is its crappy focusing ring.
