p.1 #1 · fast 35mm manual lenses?

are there any cheaper alternatives to the 35 1.4L? i am looking for something for the 5d
in the 28-35mm range. i dont mind manual lenses i was also thinking of picking up a Haoda horizontal split focusing screen so i can make it easier to use manual focus.
any advice would be great

35/2 would be an obvious choice, or do you need f/1.4? There are 35/1.4 Nikkors around, but the IQ is not very good wide open.

The 35 f/2 is quite good optically in most ways, but it is not the best choice if you intend to use manual focus.

I might consider the new Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 ZE. Alternatively, there are many good alt lenses that can be used with adapters.

Canon 28 1.8. Fantastic little lens.

Minolta Rokkor 35/1.8
Olympus 35/2
Vivitar 35/1.9

Any and all of these smoke the Canon EF 35/2 (which is a joke, really...compared to their FD 35/2 versions), for a lot less $. Check the alt forum for tons of details on these options.

I, for one, am waiting for the Samyang 35/1.2. Not sure how long the wait will be though...

There are a number of good manual focus alternatives you can consider in that range. They include:

at 28mm

Olympus OM Zuiko 28mm f/2 - a nice and relatively small fast 28mm
Nikon 28mm f/2 AiS - very decent lens and not very expensive
Zeiss 28mm f/2 - Available in Contax/Yashica mount and just recently in ZE (i.e., Canon Mount) pretty expensive but a very nice lens

at 31mm

Pentax FA limited 31mm f/1.8 - a very highly regard lens and although it can be used as an autofocus lens on Pentax bodies, it can be used as a manual lens on Canon. It isn't exactly cheap, however.

at 35mm

The three that Ed mentioned and
The ZF 35mm f/2
The Nikon 35mm f/2 and the 35mm f/1.4 - the f/1.4 is somewhat weak wide open mainly because of veiling flare.
The Leica 35mm f/2 is also a very nice lens and isn't too expensive.

I hope this helps, but you will get a lot more advice on the alt forum.

Sigma 28 f/1.8, Zuiko 28 f/2 (superb), ZE 35 f/2 (should be superb), C\Y Zeiss 35 f/1.4, Nikon 35 f/1.4 Ai-s.

The Zuiko is ridiculously tiny, sharp wide open, has floating elements so you can get great IQ near mfd and is around $400.

This is Zuiko 28 f/2 wide open on the 5D
