p.2 #1 · Thoughts on Live View?

I wonder if this also applies to CMOS

I installed the Magic Lantern firmware to add an audio levels display (and other features) for video recording on the 5D II. One of the things it does is tell you the temperature of the sensor. Mine under very ordinary usage was over 150 deg F.

In order to do star trails with the 5D, I need to set up in the afternoon while the sun is still up, and then let the camera sit on the tripod until it's time to shoot. So I can appreciate how live view helps!

I mainly upgraded from a 5D to 5DII for the video functionality. Now that I've been playing around with Live View, I honestly think that alone is worth the upgrade price. I'm so happy with this feature, yay technology!

Are there an improvements to Live View on the 7D and 1DIV?

I like live view on my 40D because it brightens up the image (if it is bright, like outside) during DOF preview, then you can really see what your DOF is. I still prefer the optical viewfinder in most conditions, because my 40D can't do LV AF. I find it most useful in tripod exposures, mainly landscape (I still prefer my optical VF for star trails). I also like using it when I want to keep my camera quieter, like recitals, etc. Exp. Sim. is cool sometimes too.

It is a useful feature in a few situations, in my opinion, but it does NOT replace the VF.

Too bad Canon doesn't have a heat sink on the back of the sensor running down to the base, then an L-bracket or rail could be used as a radiator. Could even put a frozen gel pack on the rail to keep it "chill", though condensation could be an issue during high humidity.

I guess I'm among the few not all goo-goo eyed over 5DII LV: I greatly prefer the VF. In fact, the huge and clear optical VF is the main reason I bought a 5DII (&5D in 2006). But, save product photography and macros, I'm mainly a shoot from the hip type. I have used VF to shoot over heads in crowds, so it does get used maybe 1% of the time. Sure drained my battery fast. If you're into VF you'll want a spare battery or two in pocket.

In my 40D Manual (which I just happened to have on screen) it says:

Cautions for prolonged use:
When you shoot continuously for a prolonged perios or use Live View for a long period, the camera may become hot. Although this is not a malfunction, holding the hot camera for a long period can cause slight skin burns

!!

So yes, it gets hot!

Must be a different manual than the one that came with my (US) 40D
If Live View shooting continues while the <thermometer icon> warning icon is displayed and the camera's internal temperature increases, the LiveView shooting will stop automatically. Shooting will be disabled until the camera's internal temperature decreases

Has anyone ever had the camera shut down LiveView for this??
