Decided to give a try at orchids (not from the wild)
I used a black shirt for background and put the camera on long exposure, lit them by free flashing at various angles
First two were with my new 450D and 50mm 1.8, last three with the S5 IS

I made my own black back ground for flowers especially orchids.

Get a piece of 30" X 3/8" PCV from the hardware or scrap from your plumber.

Buy a piece of the best black velvet you can find from JoAnn Fabric - 18 " wide.

Seal the cut edge with a fluid sold at JoAnn's.

Use a double face tape or velcro to hold the material on the PCV allowing 6 " on either side to hold the back ground.

With your camera on a tripod and an infra red remote you can hold the back ground and get your image after you compose it.

You can rol up the velvet and store it easily.
