Well the rings arrived 
Tools at hand, Large plastic storage box to catch anything that might fall out. 00 sized posidriver, a valium tablet and plenty of light.
Removed the four screws and carefully removed the chrome end cap that is all part of the contact ring at this stage. No need to dismatle any further. Being careful not to disturb the wires from the contacts to the lens inner (more than enough free play) the sealing ring just pulls off of the chrome base plate (there is a lip that sort of guides you where to put the new one on but it is a very loose fit and requires more than ten fingers to hold it in place all the way round as you lower the cap back into place but as the cap enters the rear of the lens it becomes a tight fit because of the new ring and it all then holds in place. Worth noting that I put two small marks (one on the end cap and one on the lens barrel) just to make sure that I dropped it in exactly the right position although the wires sort of determine where it should go. I was going to take some images as I went along but to be quite honest once I had pulled the end cap out and it was hanging on the wires it seemed like pushing my luck to start messing around.
Tested and all seems to be OK.
I`ve got two more rings( for my 17-40 and 24-105) ready for when I consider the need. They are all the same size and BTW my 1.4 ext looks to be of the same size.
Just a point worth mentioning is that in a fairly short period of time the old sealing ring had become a lot less flexible than the new ones. If you look closely at your lenses with the sealing rings you will notice that the rear lens cap doesn`t cover the seal so leaves it out in the air so to speak and just like most other things they will deteriorate just from being in open air.
Turned out to be one of the easier jobs I`ve undertaken as far as camera gear goes so my advice to anyone remotely mechanically minded is to do it yourself and save yourself A. the lose of your lens while it`s away and B. the extra cost involved sending it in to a service centre.
