Man I love that. Used to live right next to the Milwaukee Road tracks in Milwaukee growing up and couldn't wait until the HIAWATHA came through. Different engine but what a locomotive and beautiful as heck. Any chance you have this shot in color too, know it's the BW forum but I would love the know the color scheme, pretty please. Thanks for sharing by the way.

Wow. Like something out of an old 40's serial later put on television. Amazing how sleek the shape is.

How many dreams did she transport? How many of them did come true?

That's a GG1, these were still running between NYC and Wash DC when I first hired on the RR in 1979.

Thanks to Tim, Ray, Marcelo, Steve and Scott for your comments.

When I first saw her it was the shine that caught my eye and then it was as though I had just entered a movie set with all of the men in fedoras and the ladies in hats and gloves. She was built during the war years, so I imagine, Marcelo, she carried many with hopes and dreams.

The GG-1, a Raymond Loewy influenced design, was first built in 1934. I think there were close to 140 of them. They pulled trains carrying literally millions of people between NYC, Philadelphia, DC, etc. Who knows how many servicemen scared and home sick passing out to their first posting in some foreign place during WWII rode behind these sleek fast machines? And how many veterans wounded or triumphant came home, and yes how many coffins returned to cities, small towns and farms across America to families and lovers?

In the summer of 1968, a GG-1 pulled the special train from New York to Washington bearing the body of Bobby Kennedy the tracks lined the whole way with mourners. Who knows what dreams died that day.
