p.3 #1 · Canon S90 - I'm very impressed!

Everything in photography is about compromise. No one disputes the IMAGE quality of this camera versus an SLR is inferior, however for some of us the UTILITY is more important. While I am enjoying even more photographic opportunities, you can sit at your computer and argue about IQ.

Don't take yourself too seriously. Nobody really gives a flying frick about any of this. We're justing passing gas, time and basically screwin' off at work. I'll probably buy one of those damn S90 thingies 'n use to pop a shot here 'n yonder. Maybe I'll post pics of the S90 bumpin' uglies wiz mah iPhone juz to piss off some photogeeks.

Holy Moly,

I wasn't aware that little compacts could be so confrontational

Well, I think that I actually have something useful for this thread that may even keep the "Canon SLR" folks from whining

I actually shot the same scenes with my S90 and my Canon 40D with my EFS 10-22. The S90 was handheld, and the 40D was tripod mounted. Each image was processed as I saw fit for that image.

I started out comparing my S90 with my LX3, but then I just pocketed the LX3 and used my 40D instead for comparison. I like to process, and the S90 RAWS kept up with me more so than my LX3 or my G9 and G10 ever did. Looking back at these, probably the S90 images could have used slightly more contrast for a little more pop. I'm sure they would respond very well with that. I like that little camera.

S90 top, 40D bottom.

S90 top, 40D bottom, with another S90 image thrown in.

Thanks,

I would *so* get myself one of these if it were about $100 cheaper. But then again, maybe not, as I seem to have become afflicted with the dreaded 'L' disease, and need every last penny to fund my dangerously unhealthy habit.

BTW, briangg, those are nice shots! My favorite is in post #18, taken with the 40D. I love how bright those little patches of blue sky just pop out from the clouds. I bet you the S90 images would look even better if you could put a little circular polarizer in front.

I too haven't had fun with a p&s since my F30 died a year & a half ago.
Had the G10. Good but big, got stolen. Have the LX 3, limited zoom, great for Landscape & Cities Crappy for people..
Alert me when theres something good in a pocket ps.
On another note looking over my old pics, I've noticed my original (and now stolen) 5D had nicer skin tones and more 3Dish depth than my 5D2. bummer

You can always hold a larger sized pola in front of the s90... although that would look funny... holding the s90 way in front of you with one hand, while balancing a pola in front of the s90 with the other hand

I'm waiting for Cokin or Lee to make some weird gigantic contraption that would enable the use of 82mm filters on the S90.

Hi there
I had previous cameras like S45 / S45 S70 but got a G10 before the S90 came out.
I LOVE the G10 even though its discontinued - although I would certainly have got the S90 had it been available. I'll stick to the G10 for the moment.

Btw Barrel distortion is easily fixed aslo in PS etc etc.

It's the nature of the beast if you use these tiny cameras.

Cheers
-K

Thanks. I did use an ND grad on the 40D.

Just a few thoughts from that outing. The light was not that extreme, but I was certainly aware that the S90 was not blowing out highlights like my LX3 and G10 usually do. I never had to keep a constant eye on that like I usually do. ISO 400 gave a nice smooth file. No real noise issues. The S90 RAWS processed very nice in DPP, and I was able to work them in PS without them falling apart.
And it was fun to use it out in the field.

It kept up with me

Brian

It's really not. I don't know how they could be less ambiguous.

This is the Canon-mount SLRs forum.

Sorry, but really? Pull the stick out of your ass.

OP: Thanks for the thoughts on this cool little cam. Definitely something to add to the "want but can't afford" list, and the type of camera I've been hoping someone would produce for a long time.

Ooo I was wondering when this was coming out. It looks great! I don't mind barrel distortion either plus if I decide I mind it from what you guys said its easily corrected.
