p.1 #1 · Traded: Canon 300mm 2.8L non IS for Canon 5dmkII

Pretty straight forward. My lens is in near flawless condition. Expecting the same from a 5DmkII. Curious to see if any one wants to do this trade.

Id sell it for $2650-net which is the price of a similar lens i saw go on FM. My lens is probably in the best condition it could be.

Comes with the lens, cap, hood and leather pouch.

I don't have the body to trade. Are you interested in selling it?

He had this up for sale for quite some time with no bites. Honestly I dont understand the reluctancy to buy the non IS for quite a savings over the IS, especially with a copy that is in great condition. Personally I have found that my copy of the non IS outperforms the IS version I tried in terms of sharpness and contrast. Also I dont see the point in IS for a lens that will not be shot handheld. Can this be shot hand held, well yes but not for long unless you have arms that look like tree stumps. If I am at an all day event shooting soccer games there is no way I would be holding it. It rests on a monopod or tripod depending on the venue. The IS version will switch off the IS if mounted anyhow so whats the point unless you do a lot of panning shots.

I agree with you 100%. It doesn't matter whether you have the non IS or the IS version, you're going to want to have these lenses on a tripod or monopod anyways.

Can you imagine hand holding one of these lenses for entire game?

I hand held my 300Non IS every game for a year, and still do the same with my 300IS. I've never mounted it to a tripod. Many people do the same thing.

I shot a race weekend at the Dayton 24 hour race earlier this year with no tripod : ) that being said, I'll probably get a non-is version for next years race because of my style of shooting.

I don't think it's the fact that it doesn't have IS, it's just that Canon won't touch it if it breaks down.

Big issue if I were looking for a 300 2.8.

There are other places like mid state camera repair that will work on them.

There are plenty of places to service them. I even got Canon to service mine when I took My MkIII in. The literature states to bring in acessories with the body so I did. They cleaned and aligned it.

For you guys that are hand holding I will pass on an arm wrestling competition with your supporting arm. I am no weakling and have shot handheld for a few frames here and there and this is not all that bad but when you are constantly peering through the viewfinder for hours on end there is no way I would even think to attempt this. I guess its all about your shooting style. If you are one to watch with the camera in the rest position and snatch it up in hopes to catch a shot or something like motor sports where you have time to wait then its plausible. If you shoot something like soccer where the action is all over the field and the moment of truth isnt going to wait for you to get your camera to the ready position then support is necessary if you want to get the shots that will not wait for you and be tracking AI servo continously. If you can do that handheld then as stated you have tree trunks for arms.

Most that I now shoot is with the 300 2.8 non IS mounted on a monopod. Compared to what the IS Version is going for if the lens is in good condition then its a good deal. Honestly a monopod is a lot less expensive that IS will cost you in a lens and the 300 2.8 is one of the sharpest lenses Canon has ever made next to the 200 1.8. I bought my 300 2.8 new and it has become one of my favorite lenses.

I shoot soccer hand-held all day long. I prefer a lower perspective - the kids look "larger than life" and you can get in there when they have their heads down. Monopods repulse me in this fashion - you get the same towering perspective.

I also JUST got my non-IS back from Canon Service. Was front-focusing and they replaced the lens mount, cleaned, aligned, and mailed it back. I am CPS, but I don't think that matters. It's back to focusing on the correct plane, and I absolutely love it!

In short - you CAN get it serviced, and it IS worth it.

Wow Canon still will service this lens? I am CPS also, I have the 300 non IS and didn't know they would service it... This is a fantastic lens and if you shoot sports you will Absoloutly LOVE this lens & this is a great price You should BUY it!

P.S. I shoot all kinds of sports, Soccer & Rugby & shoot hand held all day with the 300 f2.8 attached to my 1DMKIII but then I am a mutant!
