Some of you guys take comments about COMPANIES a little too personal. The companies of Adobe and Phase One are what I don't like. I don't like the company and the way they do business. The employees have nothing to do with it.

Between Adobe and Phase One, Phase One is the lesser of the two evils.

I don't need to take a step back, I know exactly what I said.

BTW, I'm not the only one that isn't happy with either company.

as far as the 7D conversion....does it matter if I get the C1 Pro or standard. I already have LR2 and plan on the upgrade, SO i really do want to spend 400.00 for C1 just to convert my 7D RAW files...

Way better in terms of IQ.

I once did a comparison of IQ between Lr2 and C1 v4... I suppose you'll spot big differences at 100%, but it's also something that will most likely be lost at the print level.
The C1 conversions also seem (to me) to take a bigger beating when messing around with them in PS.

Lr2 is on the left and C1 is on the right, default settings with daylight balance. Lr2 thinks daylight should be more warm/magenta than C1 for some reason.

I took this hand-held at about f/5 and a good enough shutter speed on my 5D2.

The following crops had highlight recovery cranked up to full as well.

I have to admit though, Lr2 is much easier to use when slogging through hundreds of photos, which is why I use it in addition to C1.

What sharpening settings did you use for LR, as it's defaults are useless. You should be able to do much better, although not quite as good as C1.

Lr's sharpening seems useless to me in general, so I tend to do it later in photoshop... I'm sure you can get both to look very similar, but C1 just gives me a better starting point and in the end, results.

I suppose the photo was kinda crappy to begin with anyway. I might try another test with tripod/mirror lock-up/liveview some time later, to remove photog error.
In the end I suppose it doesn't matter unless you do wall-size landscapes for a living.

How about a 3-way brawl between LR vs DPP vs C1? Just in terms of image quality, colour, contrast, sharpness, etc.

More or less what I've been doing lately. DPP wins the prize for doing a quick and dirty conversion without all the bells and whistles of import folders, arbritrary rotation etc and makes good conversions with it's limited tools.

LR has easily the best workflow for a large number of files but is badly let down by it's sharpening which is average at best

C1 5Pro is awkward if you have lots of files (although the new focus tool is brilliant) but it's conversions are clearly and comfortably the best of the bunch, although they do take longer to convert on my PC than the LR ones. Sharpening is excellent as is the range of tools now available.

I'm seeing exactly the same results as Kolor-Pikker's samples. Night and day really

So you pays yer money... or not

YMMV

LR 2.x is not as bad as some make out for sharpening, but it can't quite match C1. You have to experiment a fair bit to find the best settings. Why Adobe chose the defaults it did is strange, as it does the program no justice. However, improvements are still needed and early reports say LR3 is much better.

Thank you David. I really appreciate the review but I think I should've been clearer... What I meant was that perhaps someone here can post a similar comparison as Kolor-Pikker's, only this time with the DPP included.

You'd really want to include Bibble 5 in that.

If I can find time tonight I'll do a Bibble 5 Preview/LR3/Cap One 5/DPP shoot-out.

That would be much appreciated Keith.

As my photo collection grows, I want to start looking for a better photo manager/converter. That kind of shoot-out would be very helpful, at least to nudge me in the right direction.

I might be able to fix something up as well, when I get the Bibble demo.
It's already pitch black outside here (in Moscow) so I'll try a studio setup first. short winter days for the suck.

You guys wouldn't have the DxO Optics Pro too would ya?

Make it a Bibble vs DPP vs LR3 vs C1 5 vs DxO... 5-ways battle royale.

One thing that I am, perhaps unsurprisingly finding is that the conversions form the different programs do look very different, in contrast, colour, sharpness, almost everything.

I seem to go to different tools in different converters to achieve the same things, like in DPP to increase the blacks I use the slider on the histo, on LR I use the blacks command and on C1 I use levels or curves.

So any 'contest' is going to be very subjective about what an individual likes best IMHO. No bad thing - we just have more and better tools to work with
