p.1 #1 · #368 A Dog's Life: It's my chair

Our dog has taken over my recliner. He definitely thinks it is his now. He regularly rests his paws on the arm of the chair as if to say he owns it. Critiques and comments are most welcome.

Lovely pic but a bit more "air" on the top would improve it IMHO.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Hi Yakim,

Thanks for the kind words. I have some with more "air," but I liked this one a bit better. I think I like the eyes to follow the rule of thirds and then forget about the top. I can certainly see your point, however. I appreciate your comment.

Happy shooting to you too,

Steve S.

Thanks. He is a cute little guy and still thinks he is a puppy even though he is over three now.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

He's very focused!

I agree that you could give him more had room and still be within the ROT. My biggest nit is that his blue tag keeps drawing me away from the subject. I'd clone it out.

I like your idea and it's clear that he feels quite a sense of ownership!

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your critique. I recropped and added a bit of room on the top and cloned out the tag. I am glad you liked the idea.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Excellent dog portrait, Steve! He certainly has a very regal bearing - befitting his ownership of that chair.

All the best,

Endre

Hi Karen,

He is a sweetheart. Smug is what a cat should be and yours seems to have disdain down pat.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Steve,
I love the concept, the framing and the pose. But what this photo needs is a little finessing on the lighting. Softer light on the face with some diffusion would help reduced the harshness. And a little catch light for the eyes--a reflector or second flash from below frame.

All the best,
Chad

Hi Chad,

Thanks for the critique. I always appreciate your comments. I agree a softer approach to the lighting may have been nice. This is actually primary lit by the room lighting, with flash just to fill in the shadows and at larger resolution you can actually just make out the catch lights--the trouble there however is that his hair is so long it covers his eyes

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Nice work. Isn't it amazing that dogs actually have really expressive faces?
