I'm an Aperture user, and I've gotta think that this beta LR release is going to cause the dwindling Aperture community to dwindle further. Come on, Apple! Show us what's up your sleeve! Aperture 3.0 has gotta be coming out soon, right? Full 64-bit, Snow Leopard/OpenCL/Grand Central Dispatch-optimized, localized editing, some sort of editing plug-in structure that does not necessitate creating a massive Tiff, etc. Please?

I'm with you on that. I've been an Aperture user since it first came out, before LR. My main issue today, as a new 7D user,m is waiting for the OS to be updated to support the RAW format, but it seems Apple is not investing in Aperture like they used to. LR may finally be the way to go.

yep,the newest upgrade still dosn't have a horizon straightner!! I was dependant on DPP for my workflow, but dont use it any more, it has the feature set of an injured amoeba.

Have you considered a hot shoe bubble level or a grid screen maybe ??

If Canon adds the pitch/roll feature to future cameras (as with the 7D), and then they add that information to the EXIF data of their files... PS, LR and DPP should be given the ability to automatically straighten the photo.

Tried on my MacBook... installation error as well

#$%^%$#@ I need the watermark function pretty bad!!!!!!

Grab this addon... Knowing adobe, this is probably still better functionality over what they added in lr3 although I hope I am wrong.

Thanks for the tip! This works great

One "negative" though... you can't seem to include these watermarks into a LR webgallery.

Cr@p... it doesn't install on my Mac... some kind of installation error

Contacted Adobe (Lightroom team) about it, this is what they said:

Lightroom 3 beta requires Mac OS 10.5.6 or higher.

Bummer

I hope the final version is supported by Mac OS 10.4...

Why not just upgrade your OS? I doubt they will put any effort into making it work with an obsolete OS.

Interesting. I imported some photos into LR3 (7D Raws). When I select one to view in library mode, LR3 locks up, displaying "Loading."

I'll have to play around some more when I get home.

So I guess LR 3 will be more then a basic upgrade and we will have to pay 90 or so dollars ?

My understanding is that Luminance Noise Reduction is taken out of LR3.

Good luck. Why are you still stuck on 10.4? If nothing else, it looks ugly

I was about to take care of that by switching from my iMac to a MacPro... But all my money has gone to freakin' Canon stuff

Disabled - temporarily - so that people can focus on being impressed by the chroma NR.

And it is quite good, I have to say.

***Places hands at temples, closes eyes to commune with the inner photo truth***

I see a raft of digital-images-to-look-like-Cartier-Bresson w/grain & vignette to be an upcoming trend

... and as a result of the bigger files now you really need a MacPro
No worries, LR2 uses only 5.5 of my 16 virtual cores - at its peak, more often than not it's running only at 2 cores. LR3 is actually worse, but yes yes I know it's a beta and a miracle will happen.

Maybe get the i5 iMac 27"

Is this a new version of LR, or is it an upgrade? What I mean by this is, can I download an update and my 2.5 be 3, or will I have to buy 3 over 2?

Lightroom 3 when released will be a new version. If you own LR 2, you'll be able to upgrade at upgrade pricing.

All the whole number upgrades (1 to 2, 2 to 3) are major version upgrades, i.e. new programs. So yeah, it'll cost a few dollars.

Better than v2 or just stronger? They bragged about not having to move the slider over as much as before to remove noise, but is it really better?

I'm excited about this... if only because it should spur Apple to release Aperture 3.0 around the same time or slightly before. Someone found a May 2010 release for an Aperture 3 How-To book... so one may hope.

I'd really hate to have to switch to LR... the workflow and organization with Aperture is, in my opinion, just so much better. But LR really trumps Aperture in a few measures... and I'm tempted. I'll hold out another 6 months...
