I'm an Aperture user, and I've gotta think that this beta LR release is going to cause the dwindling Aperture community to dwindle further. Come on, Apple! Show us what's up your sleeve! Aperture 3.0 has gotta be coming out soon, right? Full 64-bit, Snow Leopard/OpenCL/Grand Central Dispatch-optimized, localized editing, some sort of editing plug-in structure that does not necessitate creating a massive Tiff, etc. Please?
I'm with you on that. I've been an Aperture user since it first came out, before LR. My main issue today, as a new 7D user,m is waiting for the OS to be updated to support the RAW format, but it seems Apple is not investing in Aperture like they used to. LR may finally be the way to go.

If Canon adds the pitch/roll feature to future cameras (as with the 7D), and then they add that information to the EXIF data of their files... PS, LR and DPP should be given the ability to automatically straighten the photo.

I was about to take care of that by switching from my iMac to a MacPro... But all my money has gone to freakin' Canon stuff

No worries, LR2 uses only 5.5 of my 16 virtual cores - at its peak, more often than not it's running only at 2 cores. LR3 is actually worse, but yes yes I know it's a beta and a miracle will happen.

Is this a new version of LR, or is it an upgrade? What I mean by this is, can I download an update and my 2.5 be 3, or will I have to buy 3 over 2?
Lightroom 3 when released will be a new version. If you own LR 2, you'll be able to upgrade at upgrade pricing.
I'm excited about this... if only because it should spur Apple to release Aperture 3.0 around the same time or slightly before. Someone found a May 2010 release for an Aperture 3 How-To book... so one may hope.
I'd really hate to have to switch to LR... the workflow and organization with Aperture is, in my opinion, just so much better. But LR really trumps Aperture in a few measures... and I'm tempted. I'll hold out another 6 months...
