p.1 #1 · Pricing: Images for a non-profit organisation

Hey guy,

I've pretty much always worked for someone on a salary, So havent had to worry to much about selling digital images, but i've had a non-profit organisation ask me for a price per images for some images I took for them.

Its a non-profit org that supports teenagers over a 12month period. They have a fundraising bush walk over 96km of hills over a weekend. (some crazy people actually run it!). I was there and took photos of the people partaking in the activity, and sold prints to them.

I donated some images to the org for them to use for their website, but now they have asked me how much I want for individual photos for them to use them in a coffee table book of the activity.

I've built up a good relationship with these people and they don't want to rip me blind, but at the same time I don't want to take them for a run and ruin the relationship as I have bigger plans with them in the future. (a bit of a personal doco project)

I don't know what quantity they want at this stage, but roughly in what ball park should I sell the images to them for?

Thanks for the help

Michael

strategically, i like the idea of quoting the "going rate" for an established photographer making a living by photography alone and then apply a large discount (90%?) to what you think is a workable price that you can really agree on. be sure that both the "going rate" price and the large discount are documented in your invoicing. this allows you to charge someone else higher when the time comes to be able to ask the "going rate" and actually expect to receive something close to it. as for the actual value of "going rate" it depends on usage rights, image size, and print run. if any of the images are to be used in promotional material for the book or other uses, those usage rights have to be established and paid for as well.

"Going rate" for print is often based on upon the expected circulation. Don't be afraid to ask.
