I just want to run a poll because of he mixed reaction I am seeing about the specifications. Why did Nikon price their D3S/D3 so high it gave Canon incentive to jack up prices.

I think we need to see some results first. It's certainly a solid contender, and if Canon got the AF and high-ISO capabilities right, it'll be a great competitor.

Perhaps it depends on which brand of lenses you own.

Too early to tell.
We need to see high iso samples, reports of AF performance, etc.

Still wish they had gonne full frame though...

interesting that rob galbraith mentions an "eye-popping top ISO of 102,400" in the D3s, where when canon does this, it's simply a "top ISO of..."

don't give canon any credit there...

I hate to say it (I really really do), but I think that Nikon has the edge in terms of specs. here. I find it difficult to see the point in the 1.3x sensor when Nikon provide all options in the same camera (FF + Croped sensor for 1.6x lenses). Only if resolution - both in still and video - is an issue the Canon has the edge in my opinion. Now this is only down to specs. - time will show how they compare in real life.

That is a tough choice. If you use wideangles then the "s" is needed. They will probably be around the same price point in the used market next year. I'm thinking maybe two of each would be a good move, at least until the 1Ds MK IV arrives. The $64,000 question is whether it will have a improved frame rate or deeper buffer, which are limitations of the s series.

Doubt the iso performance will be as good as the D3s. Canon is good, but you can only get so much out of a smaller sensor.

I have been a pretty harsh critic of Canon during my 1DMkIII woes but I don't think that there is enough of a difference between the two bodies to either declare one the winner or to care to much about the issue. At this point and at this level you are buying one brand over another for very particular reasons and you know what you need to do your job. In some cases it may be Canon and in others, Nikon.

Everyone is wetting themselves over specs.. Let's be serious; how well did that work witth the 1D3 again exactly? As someone that bought two, I can say it didn't work very well at all so let's wait and see how good the camera is before we pronounce Canon as the winner....

News flash - Anyone that thinks Sony is standing still is just plain nuts.. Sony and Nikon will release more cameras that will have everything Canon is offering and more, in a shorter time frame than Canon's 3 year cycle. I would expect Nikon to release the D4 by Fall 2010 at the latest, surpassing Canon yet again. Canon is playing catch up now; they are no longer market leaders...

No they are not, and that to me is a fantastic thing! Good for Nikon and Sony (if the Sony rumours are true) for making Canon take note that they are not invincible and need to do more to keep their customers.

If I were starting over and in the market for a hig-end set up, the cheaper D3s would be very very appealing.

Yes, it's better. Why? Because it'll shoot my Canon lenses.

Honestly, I think that within the last year or two, Nikon has finally "closed the gap" with Canon, at least when it comes to high ISO.
