You did really well with timing, I think the issue though is positioning; looking at a lot of spandex in these shots, faces would be a lot better

6, 8 and 10 are my favorites seems to be a lot of butts in the pictures I am certainly not complaining but it is a lot better if you can get their faces in the shot.

I figured that D1 lighting would let you drop below ISO 3200--live and learn! Vball is so very hard to shoot, especially at the college level (I imagine, as I shoot high school), where the action is very fast.

8 and 10 have faces, ball, and contact, and I like the hitter's attention to the back row defender in 7. Nice shots. I think that fixing your horizons would help these, too.

#1 makes the woman look 9ft tall
#8 is clearly the pick of the litter

Athletic butts in spandex shorts are always a nice thing but this is a sports forum

VB is my latest struggle as well....

I see a lot of bad angles, bad positioning and shots with out the ball. I am finding that it is better to get up off the floor to shoot if you have that option.

As mentioned faces would be better. If you have to shoot from the floor, can you get closer to the middle near the net judge? I think I am allowed with in 10 feet of the net judge and 3 feet from the edge of the court. Talk to the net judge and see if that is an option.

Also, watch your horizons....

Nice effort. Welcome to the tough world of VB shooting....

sure like that #10, has it all, face, ball, action, spectators,, always difficult to get a slam at just the right time to include those items,,

another good angle is high up on the ends so you can shoot your home team face on and through the net,, can capture lots of action with full face,,

Hung: Interesting shot selection. I'd be interested to know what you saw in #'s 2 and 11 that led you to post them. Much of the feedback you've already received gives you an idea of what a critical viewer is looking for/at. It might also be helpful to know what you see when you look at these shots.

Thanks everyone for your comments. The general comments are that most of the shots don't show enough facial. The reason is ..... i was seating from behind, at seat #8 from the diagram below:

This image is copyrighted by the owner

I tried to buy a ticket with better seat, but those are reserved only
I could move around since there were empty seats on the sides, but i didn't want to do that.

@h_2_o:
I have camera in manual 1/1000-1/1250, wide open at f2.0 for 135mm, or at f1.2 for 85mm (static shots). ISO was at 3200 for all action shots, AI servo AF.
I don't have much time, so i just crop and convert the raw files with 10/20 for noise reduction in DPP (Canon raw converter), then make one action in ps3 (brightness = 12, contract =8, saturation = 12, shadow recoverty = 10, resize to 750, sharpen 205, 0.5, 8). I do a batch for all of the photos with this action and upload to the web.

@Russ Isabella:
Thanks for your comments. About #2? well, i see real beauty in her move. For #11? I don't know, that photo gets lot of hits in my flickr page.

Again, thanks everyone for your inputs. They defenitely help me on the next game.
Any more C&C are welcome.

for what you had to deal with and where you had seats i liked the shots. More facial expressions always but shooting conditions do not always lend themselves to that.

with the 135 2 if you can get right on the net in section 3 or 11 in the middle level of those sections that lens will shine (at least on a 1.3 crop factor) I've found that floor lvl is just a bit close for that lens. however if you can get floor lvl and have an 85 1.8 that also is a great lens for those areas. I've played with the 1.2 in those situations and honestly for moving action it is just too slow IMHO

Hey there,

Some general onservatios...

#1 - Boring warmup picture. Don't worry more sports that do warmups are boring, teams going through the motions until game time.
#2 - Look like she is trying to swim standing up. No need to post.
#3 - Powerful serve? The picture hardly tells the story, she could be easily jumping for a spike, or a high-five jube.
#4 - Wrong angle, no ball. No need to post.
#5 - Wrong angle.
#6 - By far the best picture, but the floor is tilting. Make sure your verticals are vertical...
#7 - I hardly think the player on the floor would appreciate this point of view of her but.
#8 - Not bad, but I don't like seeing the legs of the foreground players cut off.
#9 - Could have been great like #6, but no ball. Love the expression on #5 player.
#10 - See #8
#11 - See #7
#12 - See #11 (I would want to see the coaches face in the huddle to accept this one, otherwise. it's kind of like a T&A shot without the T...)

As in real estate, this series is all about location, location, location. For me, 8 and 10 are the best. Face, ball, contact (or a near block). I can't imagine D1 lighting needing iso 3200.

Bow down to Washington.

Yes. VBall is tough to shoot, especially if you are stuck in one location. When shooting, you need to look for angles that will give you clear shots of the faces, or if shooting through the net, being able to adjust focus to the face and not the net. Watch your horizons and when stuck in a position like you were, focus more on the other side of the net stuff where they are looking your way.
