p.1 #1 · I sent my D3 in / Smokey LCD (photo)

Today I sent my D3 to Nikon in CA so they can take a look at my LCD glass as discussed in another thread. It has a milky / smokey film on the backside of the preview glass. They will either repair it as an honrary warranty or quote me a price. Hopefully it will not cost me anything. If it does cost, I hope it will not cost much.

Here is a photo:

So do any of you camera owners have this problem in this advanced stage? Mine is pretty bad. It will arrive at Nikon on Monday the 12th. I will keep you all posted as to what Nikon service has to say about it. I'll be in touch.

Well mine was bad enough to where sunlight washed out the image because of this stuff. I bought my camera in december 2007 as well. yours will get worse and you may hate it then. I hope Nikon tells me what this is and if it can be avoided.

I returned my D700 to NIkon for the very same reason. Unfortunately, it took 2 attempts to repair correctly, but they did take care of the issue. Good as new now. I sincerely hope this is a problem that comes back again....!

I had a bad lcd display seal on a D700 that I bought. All kinds of dust under there in only a week. Fortunately, I have a good dealer that took care of the issue for me.

What? You hope it comes back again? I don't, I am sure you meant you hope it never comes back again. Did Nikon charge you for the service? My D3 is no longer under warranty.

My D300 has a problem similar to this. I sent the camera in just under the wire for the warranty period and it came back better, but some dust reappeared after a month or so, and I just threw my hands up and now live with it (the scratches on my viewfinder are a much bigger issue). The problem on my camera comes from the seals around the rear buttons, I can blow on some of the buttons and see condensation from my breath appear on the inside of the rear glass.

Hey Todd, mine is the other thread. Just heard back from Nikon Australia. They rang me to tell me that it has been caused by moisture ingress and came from the inside not the outside which i think is a crock of ....

This was before we even got onto the "swipe" marks on the inside of the glass. I was told that if I wanted them to give a repair estimate that they would put "uneconomical for repair" as they would have to replace all the electronics inside the body as well as the lcd.

The camera is fully functioning working order BTW, has never been for a dip or out in prolonged heavy rain.

Good luck with your D3 but then again I get the feeling that Nikon US is a whole lot more understanding due to the size of the market compared to either Nikon UK or Nikon Aus.

Love my Nikon D3's but if and when they admit to this issue is a crap shoot in the US or anywhere. Had one body they fixed no questions and second they wanted to charge for until I give them the serial number and repair info on the first. By the way the body is only weather resistant and not anything else if they choose to be jerks. Great cameras but you have to hold their feet to the fire on warranty issues because they really love to escape.

The problem I had with my D3x a few days after I bought it was that the LCD would fog up in the centre but after a while disappear. Nikon replaced the screen with a D3 logo'd one at which point I pressed for and got a new replacement.

Hope they repair yours ok.

They will estimate $480 to do the repair. I sent a body under warranty for a similar issue and they effectively canceled my warranty. Nikon USA repair sucks.

Wow! Well if I get slammed with that, I will not pay that much for cleaning. I will have them send it back to me and use Proffessional camera repair in Houston, Tx where he quoted me 150.00 for the repair. Hopefully Nikon will just fix it.

You must have done something that made them cancel the warranty. It's not legal to just cancel a warranty for the heck of it.

They claimed I got it wet inside. The thing that gets me is that I am now sure that it's oil, not water on the inside of the LCD glass. What am I going to do sue them over a $75 repair? Refusing to do the repair under warranty could be considered canceling it, since i only had one month left on the warranty. I will spend the rest of my life discouraging anyone sending anything to Nikon for repair.

They said mine had suffered "some sort of liquid penetration" and that it was uneconomical to repair as they would have to replace all the electronics inside as they had corroded as well as the screen. I mean, what can you do ? I assured them that it had not ever been dropped in water or heavy rain but they insisted that it had. the camera works perfectly despite the alleged "corrosion" to the electronics.

If I hadn't just bought a D700 I think I would have jumped ship.
