p.1 #1 · 7D does HS Volleyball (ISO 5000 and ISO 6400 examples)

So I picked up a 7D at my local camera store right before shooting vb tonight...had no time to read anything and boy this is not intuitive as other Canon bodies...but I managed.

Here is a shot at ISO 5000 to show what it is capable of

This was shot 1/500 at 2.2

Okay so initial impressions...this body is not as responsive as either my 1D bodies...but much more so than my 5D or 30D...it seems to hesitate just a little more than my 1 series before acquiring focus. Having said that IQ seems to be very nice. Menu layout is way different than what I'm used to...will take some time for sure.

Tried wireless flash tonight and works like a charm...so far so good!

Oh and since I didn't have time to figure out what I was doing I realize now that NR was set to normal for this shot.

Here's one heavily cropped:

Wow. I'd take that at that ISO anytime.

I see a problem with a strange checkered pattern.

Hehe, I'm pretty sure the poster was referring to the net.

so what do you guys think? This will definitely be my go to when the light is too low for my 1ds at 3200 iso...this should make an interesting backup sports camera.

To think there are people on DPR that wants canon to g back to 1D's MP level for low light..

Did you use auto-white balance or custom?

This thing has a ton of tuning options so I really want to read the manual before I do anything special or semi scientific. I just came from home from a baseball game an after using a 1D3 and a 7D and they were locking on the same and I swear in several cases the 7D nailed some things quicker. I think you need to visit your setup because no 1d2x anything I own ever came close to a 1D3. I am not going to split hairs but the damn thing is fantastic, it's moves the whole bar on 1.6x bodies and boy do I wish by 5d2's had this high ISO and AF.

Nice shots for volleyball. Makes my decision a bit easier. Looks to me that B & H will get some of my money when they have it come in. I have been shooting daughters HS volleyball , and some boys wrestling. I think the 7D will become my primary for that and that I will make the 50D backup.

Hopefully my good luck will continue, I won big contest at Newegg sweepstakes and if timing works out they will be sold on auction about the time B & H starts shipping 7D.

i sent you a pm as well...to be fair i definitely need to do some more shooting...the gym was very dark so really bad and good way to test i'm sure...i bet my 1ds would have been struggling some too.

dwweiche -

some shots were custom off a white tshirt and some auto...this one was custom...later when shooting auto i was impressed with the results

mikemjr-

yeah i was getting frustrated with iso3200 on my 1d2 and thought i would give this try before going nikon...i'm glad i made this choice so far...and for sports the crop is a ok with me....i think you will be happy...let's just hope there are not bugs that need to be worked out...time will tell

Bricks and net, I was kidding. You know, some sort of weird checkered pattern showing up on the 7D! A net for every shot. :^)

Thanks much for the PM, I PM'd you back. Your shots are great. My head is spinning a bit but this puppy would appear to be able to focus in a black hole. I was just too pass this off to my BIF crazy son but I need to be spending some quality time with the new toy. Everything I am suppose to know and understand may have been changed today. God I love technology!

As a guy who used to shoot for daily newspapers I have shot a lot (make that tons) of sports in dark high school gyms. I can positively say that those shots at that ISO look quite impressive...

there more i look at these images i'm really blown away...and for all who are interested...i didn't realize the camera came with a default setting for which brought down the max frame rate to 7fps...it was set to Silent Mode 1...i will def try without that next time

Wow! I'm impressed...definitely.

I just wish it was a 1.3x crop. I will more than likely sell my 50D and get the 7D though.

I too had wished it was 1.3..mainly bc of viewfinder issues...they really have improved that with this 1.6 camera body...viewfinder is really nice...for field sports having the 1.6 will be nice, but for a lot of indoor stuff I am going to have adjust a little being so used to using the 1d2...I really can't wait to try this out for hs football
