p.1 #1 · Strange 580ex issue

I use 580ex's with Turbo 2x2 and radio poppers. Last weekend I was using a 2 flash master/slave setup with the poppers that I have used many times and all of a sudden the slave would fire a very weak flash about 1 or to second after the master fired, just like when you push the pilot button to test communication.

I removed the poppers thinking they were the problem and since we were indoors and less than 10 feet away I thought I would just switch back to the old IR mode and figure out the problem later since we were racing against the clock.

The same thing happened, removing the poppers made no difference. I then noticed that the master was not flashing at all, so I checked the setting to see if I have it off, which I do sometimes when I only want to use the master as a controller. It was on.

I grabbed a back up flash and went back to work. Today I tested the flash and in normal mode, not master/slave it seems to work just fine. So I switched over to a master/slave setup and fired off 10 shots at various distance using the poppers and it seemed to be just fine.

After the last shots I noticed that the flashes ready light, or the green one next to it were not lit up. A few seconds later the green and then the red told me it was ready. I fired another shots and it took 5 seconds to refresh.

So I figured it must be the turbo 2x2 cable. Before I touched the cable I switched the master switch off and put the flash in normal single flash mode and fired off the shots at a rapid pace, the refresh was instant and usual. Switch it back to master mode produced the same 5 second delay between shots. I went back and forth several time and the same conditions repeat.

Any idea what is going on? This the first time I have seen this behavior.
