p.5 #1 · Flare..UPDATE

yea ... i think we are mixing several items into an issue.
the marks being seen are probably manufacture touch-ups or the variability in the process in making the camera.

so we see the marks in a 1D, a 5D and several 5Dmkii.

The live view + Sams smookin' (literally) sun flares + big sensor + no internal cooling = bummer sensor performance.

Not sure if he knew from the get go, but this is for certain. When I have the camera less than 48 hours, and didn't even shoot it outside *(in my office at night was all I had time to test), then informed him of the condition, he said that "he swears on a stack of bibles"...a lot of good that does me.

I offered him for me to send it to Canon on my dime, and if the repair was anymore than $100, that he pay the difference (the $100 being covered by my voucher).

You know what his offer to me was? Take the camera and shove off.

Also, wasn't trying to degrade the thread, just letting know that it's not 5d2 specific.

I BELIEVE I HAVE AN ANSWER (kinda long but chill, it is worth a read). I picked up an EOS 1-v from a sports shooter a while back and he showed me a similar burn on a body that he had started to tear apart (1dMIII). After much speculation and a trip to CPS, the question was asked if his cameras were ever set down in direct sunlight for any period of time over 30 seconds. His answer was, "of course, I carry 3 bodies to cover sports and usually two are on the ground or a laying on a bag near me." The techs said that the camera/lens being in the same position to the sun for quite some time led to the burns/melts. He said it can happen inside or outside, it just has to be the perfect storm of angle of sun and lens.
I'm not saying that shooting into the sun is not the culprit here and I'm definitely not saying that I won't be shooting into the sun anymore. What I am saying is that anytime I set a camera/lens down where there is sunlight, I make sure to cover up the lens with something (you know, like a lens cap!). So that's my story and I hope you enjoyed it. Happy 50L flare to all and keep up the awesome!

I don't buy the shooting into the sun, I suspect the above is true.

Sam when you shoot into the sun do you think he gets burned back cause of the awesomeness of your flare shots?
this is a 4 page thread about internal flare damage! haha great only on FM
If we have any really rich togs out there who just wanna waste money please PLEASE get a 5dmk2 and some huge L glass and try to start a grass fire. Shoot video of this and I can guarantee fame!
I think if their was any chance you could start a fire with your camera and lens then les stroud and bear grills would have tried this already.

This is how Sam found out about this problem.....
once upon a time, last engagement shoot Sam has his trusty 5d2 and 50L. The weather is beautiful and the sun is at a perfect 40 deg. angle just for the flare shot Sam visualizes. He positions the couple under a tree with some lovely low hanging moss covered branches and takes a few steps back. He then starts to meter for the "flare shot"....hum something funny is going on. 4 stops underexposed? "but I do this every time! I am Sam Hassas, this cannot happen to ME!"
Couple is getting restless, Sam continues to struggle...
Suddenly the easy going guy looks around, sniffs..."where is that smoke coming from?!"
"oh my GAWD my blouse!" she says...
Sam looks over with both eyes..."hum"
"sorry, I don't usually spend this much time composing the "flare shot" didn't mean for the flare off my 50L to smolder your blouse, guess we are done for now..."
later that night
"quan! I spent to long on the "flare shot" and smoked some ladies blouse!"
"no way Sam! the same thing just happened to me!"
"damn" utter both simultaneously
"well lets get together tomorrow so we can ship our cameras to canon and then hit up a drink or two"
"eez a nize plan Sam"

End of story
Doug

I'm going to do a test.

I'm going to put my 5D and 40D in the sun all day tomorrow and see what happens.

If they don't melt, I'll put them in the microwave, pressing the "Popcorn" button and see what marks I get.

Should I put the Siggy 50 on it to see if adds or removes flare?

If I come home from work and my cameras look like this, I'm going to be pissed.

Sam's sensor melted. Not because of the sun, but because he once took a picture of Chuck Norris.

Wait.....I just heard back from Canon!

Apparently you can't wear a wolves shirt while holding a 5dmkII, the awesomeness of the shirt causes the inner "crap" (canon tech term) to melt.

I did have some weird 5D2 flare related stuff: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/808603/

Maybe it has something to do with any of this... maybe not (or maybe it is because of joints and spaceships ).

I have never seen anything like it with all my other cams. No burn marks on my inner 5D2 BTW.

Yep .. I've read of telephoto lenses totally smoking sensors. I'm guessing most of the flare shots are done with wider angle lenses but still damage can occur.

Actually, it is the wides that are the bigger problem - at least that was true on old Leica Rangefinders with the cloth FP shutters - normal photo would not cause problems, but don't walk around with the lens cap off - you'd soon be smelling rubber burning! I've seen more than a few Leicas with damaged shutter curtains.

The wides gather a lot of light concentrate the sun into a very small area of the sensor, more like a magnifying glass - the teles need to be pointed more directly, and spread the energy out over a much wider area (produce that large, hanging sun) - like a poorly focused magnifying glass.

I suspect either could do the damage but the teles would take longer - probably not in the short time the sensor is exposed.

Hey!!

I noticed this as well. We were out shooting an airshow up this way on the weekend and I had a 70-200 on the body. Of course the sun was way bright...went to do a portrait session yesterday and was getting over exposed by an avg of two stops. Popped off the 50 1.4 and looked inside...sho nuff'...scorchers. Now I know!

Good lookin' out.
