p.2 #1 · Best non Canon 300mm lense for Canon 1d Mark2n

This being the Alternative Gear and Lenses Forum, you can often expect responses for manual focus lenses

Doesn't a question about a Sigma or Tamron AF lens that is similar to Canon usually gets posted on the Canon forum

That's another great pic Paul! Nice job on the conversion!
What kind of problem is it that prevents stopping down on your converted FD 300mm f4 L?

Thanks!

NewFDs are a pain in the ass to get aperture working (in my experience) compared to FDs. This one was particularly challenging because the actual aperture is buried deep inside the lens. When the old mount is removed, there are two metal arms attached to it which are about 4.5 inches long and extend down into the barrel to work the aperture. There was just no way (that I could find) to link the aperture ring to one of the arms in such a way that aperture could be controlled directly. NewFDs with their two-lever system are still a mystery to me. I might have been able to figure it out if I could see what the hell was down in that dark abyss, but I didn't have the patience so I just frigged around with it until I found a position that holds the aperture wide open. Since then, I've never really looked back because I haven't once thought "shit, I wish I could stop this thing down". It's a good thing, too, since it is JB Welded like that.

Steve Spencer wrote:
Keep in mind that if you are comparing lens at 300mm the cost difference between f/2.8 and f/4 is huge. For example the Canon f/2.8 IS is $4,200 as you say, but the f/4 IS is $1,200, and the f/4 (non-IS) goes for about $600 used. So I guess the first question is do you need f/2.8 or would f/4 be good enough. If f/4 is good enough there are a lot of relatively cheap options, but if you need f/2.8 there are few that are cheap. If you give us a sense of what you need and what you are willing to spend I think people could help more.

Agree with Steve on an older 300/4 non-IS. I got a really old one here on FM B&S for around $500. Does a nice job.

I have an EOS-converted CZJ 300mm/4 Sonnar that delivers absolutely razor-sharp pictures. Dirt cheap as well...

If you want a F2.8 then I would second teh Nikon Manual Focus AIS lens, I had one for a while, ultra sharp sharp wide open, which is the main reason for buying an F2.8 lens. Both the Tamron and Tokina F2.8 lenses need stopping down to get maximum sharpness, which is kind of pointless having a 2.8 lens.

Only issue I had with the Nikon is that it is very front heavy, large lump of glass up front and a narrow rear body. So you need the Arca Swiss style dovetail tripod head system to balance it properly. Matched with the N 301 2x converter and you have a very cheap light 600mm F5.6 combo that really rocks.

I'll give an odd answer.

For outdoor sports, i would look at the 100-400 IS. It's sharp wide open, and 400 5.6 will still give decent oof as long as the focus point isn't too far away. It's also a zoom, and has AF. It's also fun.

Everyone shooting sports hits the 2.8 "wall". Everyone eventually realizes that in the supertele, you get what you pay for. But a fixed supertele is limited too. That's why better sports shooters use two cameras.

Sports kits begin with the 70-200 2.8 and a 1.4TC. You probably couldn't find a full time professional sports shooter who didn't have this lens. After that, the answer is "it depends" - on money and on the specific sports. Soccer can be shot well with the 70-200 if the shooter has sideline access. The whole game can't be covered, but that's hard to do anyways. Baseball, however, would be tough.

And the build quality is great.

But sharp is inexpensive with teles, speed is what costs. And of course no AF on CZ or Zuiko.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the following lenses:

Sigma 300mm/2.8 EX DG for EOS

Sigma 300mm/2.8 EX DG HSM for EOS

Sigma 120-300mm/2.8 EX DG HSM for EOS

Tokina 300mm AF AT-X Pro for EOS

Tamron 300mm/2.8 AF SP LD IF for EOS

.......................

A whole host of problems: used ones generally have problems, soft wide open, build quality, and relatively poor resale value.
A supertele can be used for a year or two and usually sold for 90% of the purchase price. Canon will be doing a MKII version of ths 500 and 600, but the priced will go up to Nikon levels. So expected depreciation is minimal. In fact, someone who took their money out of the stock market to buy a supertele in the last few years is ahead financially. "Honey, it's an investment!!"

If its at all possible I would find a used EF 300/2.8.

Maybe a rough looking non IS copy with good glass. The lens speed, IQ, quick handing and AF are really, really nice to have once you get past the 200m arena...

I am an even bigger fan of the EF 400/2.8 though...

DC,

I have that exact lens, and just got the 1.4 converter.

I am always intrigued though on finding some other way to differentiate my pictures. For instance, I got some great stuff shooting baseline with the Zuiko 50mm/1.8 and 1.4.

Anyone have experience with FD adapters? any good? or do you recommend the straight conversion?

The later non-ED Nikon 300/4.5's AIS lenses are excellent from wide open and cheap. They also work great with the Canon 1.4x TC. Here's a full frame, wide open, test with the Canon TC:

Are there any other specific atributes or appearance other than the lack of the ED designation and inclusion of the AIS designation that distinguishes this lens relative to those earlier than the non-ED Nikon 300/4.5's AIS lens? Do the newer ones use ED glass without identifying it as such? Do you have any pics of your lens to share?

Thanks,

Lots of lateral CA. Good bokeh. The -P would not be my first choice, but with the right subjects can be used to good effect.

I had the same question on the same body and was leaning toward the Sig 120-300/2.8.

Not sure after reading this post.

I would love to find a 300 2.8 non-IS in good condition.

The lens Rockwell comments on is several generations later than the Nikkor-P.

I just shot a test through my old Nikkor 300mm 4.5 AI and I'll be damned. That sucker is sharper on my 1DsMKIII than I ever remember it with film. I'll post an image maybe Monday, but I'd say it's as good as any of my Canon L's, including the 135 f/2 and 200 1.8. It's just a bit harder to focus. Actually I was stunned at how good it was.
