Bludomain rocks!

Indeed it does.

Also love their administration tools, fairly intuitive and easy to update.

For a custom portfolio for commercial photography purposes, in my case mostly advertising work, I've been happy with what Smugmug delivers. Lot's a customization at a good price. There's a few things I'd like to change, but can't complain for $150/year. Here: http://www.kevinwinzeler.com
The custom print ordering back-end works well too.

Agree that Smugmug delivers a quality product but was a bit too standardized for what I was looking for. I personally think $150 a year is a lot of money though for what you get...

If you are working in Apple's OS X environment also check out iWeb, it has several templates built in and they are easily customized. Best of all, if you have bought a Mac recently it is included in the iLife bundle that came with your Mac. Hosting you'll still have to solve. I like http://www.fatcow.com and have had nearly 10 years of trouble free hosting through them. My current portfolio site was created and hosted by http://www.livebooks.com but I am starting to work on a stock photo site to be hosted at http://www.fatcow.com

In the meantime I also suggest that whether you are strictly amateur, a part time or full time pro, check out http://photometadata.org for some important information about what you need to do to and what you need to look out for when prepping and posting images so that others can find them and find you.

Thanks but I've come back since the original post to share the solution I opted for. Will keep your feedback in my "website development" folder for future use!

I am looking into of having my own site too and have heard mixed reviews of Bludomain. I personally like the look of their templates, just not sure about committing at this time. Any other opinions?

You can't beat qufoto.com for price and style. $19 a month and a flash template. Really snazzy. They also have pretty good SEO to get you seen. Make sure the service you choose offers the ability to use Google Analytics to see how your site is doing.

Thanks, Pixel1970. Looks like a very promising option. I certainly will look into it.

Just curious, but what negatives have you heard about Bludomain?

my site was built using serif webplus X3. very easy to use and update, either use their templates or design your site from scratch.
