p.1 #1 · My Craigslist horror story

This morning, as I often do, I browse Craigslist to see if there are any good deals out there. Well, I open the Las Vegas Craigslist(I'm in Lake Havasu-3 hours away), and what do I see but a Sigma 50-500mm DG lens in Nikon mount, for $200!!!

Well, at that price, I would buy them all day long. They normally go for over $700. So, I call the guy. He's a 67 year old professional photographer, who shall remain nameless. I ask him a few questions about the lens. Nothing wrong with it, it's just not as sharp as he thought it would be, and he shoots a Nikon D3, and normally a 200mm F/2.

Well no kidding it's not that sharp. One, he's using it on a full frame, and two, he's handholding it, at 67 years old.

So I tell him I'll take the lens, but, that it will take me 3 hours to get there. He hims and haws about it, but finally says OK, he will sell me the lens.

So, off to the ATM I go, get the cash, then go to the gas stations, fill up the SUV, and away I go. I get to around 81 miles of his house, and I think of a question I want to ask him, plus I'm bored, stuck in traffic at a construction zone.

So "Bob" answers the phone, and I tell him who I am, and OH, BTW, I'm still 81 miles from your house, but I have a question. He tells me he has already sold the lens!!!!!

WAHT THE FU##, I say to myself. I ask Bob, are you kidding me?? He says no, he has already sold it.

So, in the calmest way I can, I tell him that I would have been there in another 1 1/2 hours, that I had already driven 1 1/2 hours and 80 some odd miles, for....and he hangs up. Well, it's time to cut my losses, so I turn around and head home.

So now I'm pissed!!! I mean really angry. But I'm confused. Should I be angry at him for not holding the lens, or angry at myself for not making it more clear to him just how far I was driving.

I felt that at his age, 67, and being a professional photographer(I've seen his web page, he's really good), that when he said he would sell ME the lens, that we had a deal.

Maybe he thought I had to go to Vegas anyways, and it wouldn't be a wasted trip. He said he didn't have my phone number when I called, but I had included it in my E-mail to him.

This whole event has seriously shaken my faith. Not only in dealing with people from Craigslist, but in dealing with any other "professional photographer".

I have always been honest my whole life, and sometimes brutally so. When I sold my second D300 to a guy in Vegas, off of Craigslist, I actually drove 30 miles round trip to meet him just off the Interstate, so he wouldn't have to drive all the way into Lake Havasu.

When I sell photography equipment on E-bay, or here, I ALWAYS include a 7-day, no questions asked, money back guarantee.

Quite frankly I'm stunned!! This whole thing has shaken me up, and maybe I should just chalk it up to a mis-communication. But, I talked to the guy for 15 minutes on the phone before I left.

I was really looking forward to seeing his D3, and the Nikon 200mm F/2 lens he had, and I had even commented on how great his work was.

So, this whole event cost me the $3.00 fee for using the ATM, plus $25.00 in gas, plus 3 hours of my semi-valuable time, for nothing. Thank god I had the presence of mind to call him when I did.

I just feel like such an idiot!!! I guess I can't blame him too much, and should probably just blame myself.
Just remember, if the deal sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

That positively blows, Paul. The guy should get run over by a train...twice.

Thanks. I'm very glad I called him when I did. I don't like to think of what I would have done if I had been standing at his front door. I'm not normally a hot-head. But really??

I have bought things off Craigslist, and had the people ship to me. I paid by Postal Money order, and have never had a problem. It's like I tell the people I'm buying from; you have my address, and I have yours.

I emailed the guy back, and basically said the world of professional photography is a very small world. You lack integrity and honesty, and those traits will catch up to you, if they haven't already.

I'm already over it, and am moving on. But, I won't do that again. It would have been a nice little profit too. Bummer.

I've heard it said that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I don't know how many times I've held an item for a seller who then mysteriously disappeared. Unfortunately, in the world of Craigslist, unlike FM, there is no way to assess the trustworthiness of the person with whom one does business. I don't blame you for being disappointed that you didn't get a steal on a lens or angry that despite following through on your promise you didn't end up with the lens. At the same time this fellow obviously had someone with cash close at hand willing to do the deal. If you've watched the feeding frenzies that occur on the Buy and Sell board when someone drops a precious piece of gear for an absurdly low price you know how upset folks can become when their claim "I'll take it" doesn't yield the prize. I've lucked out a couple of times but I understand that life really is a crap shoot. Sometimes you win and sometimes you only get tantalizingly close to winning. I'm glad you've found serenity over the lost opportunity. That said, I'm not inclined to castigate the seller for what he did. He took care of his own interests. To him you were a stranger, no more than a voice on the telephone. Better luck next time...

I agree 100%. He didn't know me from a hole in the wall. All he knew was that it was going to be 3+ hours before he got his money. He probably had someone offer him a bit more, and he took it.

I guess I expect people to have the same morals or attitude that I have, and that's an unrealistic expectation. I'm not perfect either, I guess I just got my hopes up a little too high.

And your also right about FM. I've "just missed" several bargains.
And, its the same with flea bay. But there, I usually win!!! I use auction sniper, and only bid what I can afford. It will bid automatically for me, 5 seconds before the auction closes. If I win, great. If I lose, I didn't want to spend that much anyway.

I have to admit, I like the challenge, or, art of the deal. It's almost more fun shopping, then actually getting your new lens, or doo-dad. It's like a sport. Or, an addiction.

I'd be pissed too. The guy is an a**. I hate that drive from LHC to Vegas. I'm guessing you got to around Searchlight, at least you could stop and get some McD's fries.

Not even to Searchlight. They are doing construction, and I had just passed the turn off to Laughlin as I was talking to him, so I turned around there.

Oh well, life goes on, and I'm onto another quest. The quest for the "perfect" lens for the IJSBA World Finals Jet Ski race in October. I lucked out and scored a press pass this year, now I just need the right combination of lenses. Oh, and money would help.... Baby step...baby step....

You didn't even make Cal-Nev-Ari. Why didn't you take the scenic route through beautiful downtown Bullhead City. Oh wait...BHC is as close as you can get to Hell without really being there. Never mind.

At least there's a Chevron station there with $2 dollar can drinks. You gotta love a out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere desert bargain.

If I was down there I'd let you use my 300mm AFS /TC14E.

Unfortunately that seems to be part of the game on Craig's. Occasionally much better deals can be found there than here, but nothing's certain until you have the lens in your hands.

Yea, there are some deals to be had there. But, I've found a lot of D-bags on C/L as well. There's a reason they are not selling on E-bay, or FM.

I'll PM you if I'm coming around that time frame. Probably be last minute notice though.

The lens will still work just the same.....
Still trying to figure you what lenses I'll need/use. Got me a press pass this year. So now I need to be appropriately "geeked" out.

Or, you could just wrap that puppy up, with the TC, and send it this way. I'll take good care of it, I promise. Maybe I'll even trade you some SeaDoo time. I have a 2008 SeaDoo RXT-X 3-person PWC, that will hit 68mph in the heat. And that's on my GPS.

Hey, at least you have your life....

How about that CL buyer who rents a truck, gets $600 in cash, drives to Detroit, gets robbed by the seller, gets locked in the back of the U-Haul truck and dropped off in a secluded alley. He is lucky he was in a populated area. A couple secluded days and he would have been a gonner.

I think it is hilarious that the local news got there before the cops did.
The cops had to cut the lock off the back of the truck.

I'm sure the guy's not a monster but he's certainly lacking in consideration.

I know it can be difficult at times - A guy I know was selling a car. 1 guy phoned and said he was interested. Another phoned a little later and said he'd take it. So what to do? Guy 1 is on his way but hasn't commited. Guy 2 says he'll take it but hasn't seen it yet.

In the end he left it up to whoever turned up first and handed over the money. As it happens Guy 1 decided to buy it and Guy 2 turned up 5 minutes later and was absolutely gutted he'd missed out.

I think the important thing though was that he kept them both informed of exactly what was happening at all times. A simple phonecall isn't that difficult.

You traveled too far for the "art-of-the-deal", and it was greed that drove you there. On the other hand, the lens might not have been as sharp as he admitted in which case you would have been equally disappointed, or leaving with it try to resell it knowing of it's flaw. A professional usually has more than one tele lens. His lenses would probably be subject to the same handling conditions as the Sigma. Anybody who has a good photo website, and has been around the block more than once (67 years) knows what he is doing.

If it had focusing issues, I could have sent it in to Sigma, and they charge $195 to fix it. I'm still ahead. But, your exactly right, it was greed. I don't make any claims to the contrary.
I would have never sold it with a known defect, and had planned to test it when I got back home. If it was sharp(enough), I would have just kept it. I had one before, and liked it, but needed the money at the time.

But tell me; if you were in my shoes, would you have not done the same thing? For the possibility of a profit of several hundred dollars??
