p.1 #18 · September Annoucement for 1D Mark IV | |
I've had trouble getting on their site since last Friday. He is in the process of switching over to dedicated hosting, so I'd bet that is the reason for all the down-time. Imagine the horror when I get a twitter message saying there is a new blog post about the 1D Mark IV and I can't read it!

If it does indeed remain APS-H, I just hope they dont up the megapixels to the 15-16 range, which is, unfortunately, quite likely...
I picked up some info recently indicating the Mark IV will have a 16 MB sensor.
And what about sensor size?
If it's FF, then it's fine.
If it's APS-H, then it's bad news, at least in my humble opinion.
Very disapointed with my 50d IQ performance in bad light/indoors...
My former 1DMIII was a dream in this regard.
Yeah, but you are way wrong on this. You are talking, first, about an APS-C sized sensor, a lot (relatively) smaller than the APS-H sensor of the 1D series. Coupled with the gap-less sensor lens technologies (which the Mark III doesn't use) 16MP is not that far fetched, though I would imagine it being a little closer to 14-15 to be right there with the D3 and still maximize the size of the photosites.
Second, you are comparing the sensor of an xxD camera to one going into a 1D series. Canon knows how to differentiate the quality of those sensors. Noise will likely be right on target, if not better, than that of the 5D Mark II my guess. The xxD line of cameras has pretty much always been pretty dicey (though more usable with each generation, surely) at the over-1600 ISO range.
On the topic of using FF over APS-H... I am pretty mixed. I like having that tiny bit of extra reach with the long glass, but it kills the wide-angles, something every PJ uses a lot. Losing that .3x can sometime mean someone is loosing a foot, at least with my meager 24-105L. I suppose if its APS-H, then I have to get me a 16-35L, which is next anyway .
There was also a lot of rumors about lenses, one was a 24-105mm f2.8L IS. Dang that would be HEAVY and amazing. Put one of those in a kit with the Mark IV, we got ourselves a stew going! (Arrested Development anyone?! )
