p.1 #1 · EFS 60 and extension?

I have one EFS lens, the 60 macro, which I like to take traveling because its light and adds some portrait and macro capability to my zooms. I've read a couple of mentions of using this lens with Canon's EFS capable extension tubes both on APS C and FF. I have the Kenko set and even the Canon 12 is pricey by comparison. Do you think extending this lens or using it with the 5D adds enough capability to warrant the expenditure? What would the 5D's working focus range be with 12 mm of extension?

My normal airline travel kit consists of 5D 40D 24-105 35f2 60 100-400, Kenko 20, 270EX. My pack meets the carry-on weight limits of most safari sized airplanes but is pushing it. A little Gitzo weekender goes in my checked luggage. Your opinions are appreciated.

You need the newer/latest Kenko tubes which can be used together with EF-S lenses. I have the older ones (bought them 2-3 years ago) which only fit to EF lenses.

I think the tubes are very useful and definetely worth the money. You can even use them especially in combination with your 100-400 lens.

Thanks, I hadn't known Kenko updated their tubes. The main reason I'm now carrying the 20 is for the 100-400. 20 seems about right for butterflies and other critters I can get within 15 feet of.

Just checked Amazon and B&H and the Kenko 12 is $85, same as Canon. Also, the Kenko description says its is for standard EF lenses.

You might get the whole stack with 3 Kenko tubes (12, 20, and 36 mm) for a decent offer than just buying one tube seperately. In my experience I often used them stacked or most often just the 36 mm tube.

Make sure you get the latest kenko tubes fitting to EF-S lenses, as mentioned here:

I just took delivery of the kenko canon set two days ago and it definitely say EF/EFS on the box. Have the white and red mounting markers on the tubes too. I'm currently stacking them and playing with my 70-200 L and they seem pretty good.

I have a 60 macro, but I thought I read it doesn't work even with tubes on FF digital body. Please confirm if it does in fact work.

In a thread on the 60, Yakim Peled posted a reference to a post supposedly showing images of using the 60 and 12 mm of extension on a 5D without vignetting. When I followed the reference, the image links were stale. Hence the reason for this post. I suspect the newer extenders will work with the 60 macro, even on FF bodies, but is it worth doing? For example, would an extended 60 be a decent close portrait lens on a 5D or is the working distance just too short? How close would 12 mm of extension bring infinity focus?

This is really a travel question. The 60 is a great light f2.8 96 mm equivalent lens with close focus capability. I use it for portraits, flowers, insects, or textures. A little bit of extension might be nice but I rarely find myself needing to photgraph fly's eyes . To justify investing in or even carrying a new 12 mm extender means it should bring something more such as a useful new focal range on the 5D.

The link showed compatibility with a film body but some issues with a 5D. No word on 5D MK II. If I could use the 60 on the 5D II by just buying a 12mm extension tube, I might consider it. I am also considering a 100mm macro, but to be honest, I think I prefer the smaller 60, which is a very useful FL on crop.

Agreed. I have the 100 and it is as nice a lens except its relatively heavy for the use it would get for air travel. The 60 does the same job on the 40D with half the weight and shares filters with the 35f2 I also carry. I think its time for a rare trip to a local camera shop to test the 5D, 12, 60 combination myself.
