p.1 #1 · Even more Tern ACTION (x16)

In contrast to the cloudy gloom of June, Southern California has been pretty sunny in July. Unfortunately, there's been a heat wave of late. Finally, got a chance to get out to Bolsa Chica for a walk and some fresh air yesterday, saw some friends there. "Hello!"

This post is the continuation of part I which can be seen here http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/778472. The tough part is to try and not repeat myself. It is the artist in me that always looks for new ways to be creative. Follow me through this longgggggg post, I hope it will be worth your time.

All taken with the D300, most of them with the poor man's 500mm (300mm f4 + 1.7x TC). [Yes I know I'm poor, but I got a family to feed]

, some taken with a wide angle, WIDE ANGLE!

#2 I had many failed attempts with this particular "moment-before-impact" shot using the burst mode. The D300 has a burst rate of only 8fps, and it kept missing the key moment, so I decided to switch to single exposure mode, and nailed it after 3 tries.

#3 Most of the time they come up empty, no fish!

#5 Nothing spectacular, I just like the bokeh in this one.

Fantastic set Andy - beatifully exposed and the lighting and detail are spot on. You've done an excellent job of capturing the action and telling the story.

I just want to know how you are able to throw fish and snap the shutter too

Lot's of action and plenty of neat catches and tosses Andy

These have a nice feeling in them by the surf, I like the harmony of colors and additional water spray. In looking at #14 it looks like its wings are on backwards

I like #10 and #11 and #15 is pretty intense!

These are great Andy. #15 is wow! I agree with you regarding burst VS single frame as burst relies on luck and 8 FPS is a long time between frames when something is going that fast.

Thanks Alan. While the other photographers there took aim at the terns AFTER they heard a splash, I focused on them BEFORE they started descending on a dive. It was a hit and miss, because on many occasions, they change their minds and abort the dive at the last second.

Excellent work, Andy! And well presented post! Taking action shots pose a great challenge, but I found it exiting and very interesting. I just wish I had more occasions to do that. These images show all your skillful technique in this type of photography and the dynamic quality of your images makes all the difference.

Karl,
Yeah, when people look at it, one of the words that might come to mind is "bait". I don't blame them. The terns do dive close enough that sometimes I can get wet from the water splash.

In #14, the tern shaped its wings to dive forward (to go after the dropping fish). Nice observation buddy.
