p.1 #1 · Photo of my son

I have only been a critic so far on FM, thought I'd finally post something. Just a quick snap of my son yesterday afternoon. I'm just beginning to shoot headshots this tight, and was looking for some C&C. Thanks in advance!

I like it-

He looks incredibly deep in thought (probably something along the lines of- "This big thing is pointing at me again.. WHAT ARE YOU!?!?!" ). His eyes are mesmerizing. You might want to clean up some of the hairs (the one at the top left of the hood keeps catching my eye for some reason), but very fun capture!

If I were to nitpick, I know you were going for a close crop, but I'd give him just a little more room, especially above his head- just a hint more. And while this would take away from the "snapshot" quality of this (I mean snapshot in a good way), maybe zip the jacket all the way up, so he is kind of peering over- chin hidden. Might be kind of fun.

Thank you for posting this- I am always looking for different ways of taking baby pictures. Great shot!

Nice photo. Cute kid.

Seems a little "too tight" for my taste.

Reason: Tight crops like this will greatly reduce your flexibility in making prints, framing, and stuff.

My Simple Suggestion: allow more room for the head.

Also, it is pretty big displayed on my net computer. Try a little smaller dimensions for forum posting to make it easier to see.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. There has been no crop in PP, so what you see is everything the sensor got. I am trying to get away from crops in PP to refine the way I see through the lens.

Again, many thanks for the comments and suggestions.

Very nice capture, he is a cutie.

I know what you mean by the way you see through the lens, and the posters are trying to help for future captures, as it would be a tad difficult to get a nice 8x10 quickly, for example.

When I started shooting dance kids, I did not realize that I needed to leave room for all sizes that might be ordered and it was a pain to work out. I learnt soon enough

That is a very good point that I definitely overlooked. I did not consider the crop room for printing purposes.

Thank you for pointing that out!

Very nice eyes. Usually this bullseye-ing wouldn't look good to me, but I like it in this shot.

That face, those eyes.

Would melt any heart.

Cute kid.

I like the way the eyes look with the light in them.

I also like the very subtle expression I see in the face.

Little things...like a slight lift in the eyebrow area, a little bit of puzzlement perhaps.

Lucky parents that get to see that look so often.
