p.1 #1 · Please help with PW TT1

I received my Pocket Wizard mini TT1 today. Of course, I immediately load the software and run through the motions of setting the high speed sync options. I go outside to shoot some test shots of my kids and nada. I am using it with my plus II's to fire my Quantum T5D. They will fire if the shutter speed, on my 5D2, is at or below 200. So I know they are transmitting a signal. I tried multiple different delay settings in the software and I still cannot get to high speed sync. Unless I received a bad unit, I think I am just missing something here. Anyone have any advice?

Does the T5D support Canon's High Speed Sync? Or do you mean PW's Hyper Sync? (Two different things.)

I find myself reminding people that the flex and mini, unlike other pw products are not plug in and play units...and advise reading and re-reading the manuals before changing settings. in fact sometimes you may have to refer to both the pw manual and the canon manual in order to understand how to operate the two products together. two observations: high speed sync is an ettl function, and your plus unit does not have ettl functionality ---it can hypersync......
not being able to get your camera to sync above 200 sounds like a camera issue, not a pw issue: assuming you are in av mode when you have not been able to get your flash to sync above 200, you may want to check your exposure custom functions to make sure that your flash sync speed is not on one of the settings which limits the max speed to 200...

You have three things working against you:
1) Quantum does not support HiSpeed Sync on the T5D with Canon cameras.
2) The TTL1 will only deliver Canon TTL signals to a TTL5 attached to a Canon TTL compliant strobe.
3) For the T5D to receive Canon TTL signals it has to either be attached to a TTL source by a D23W, a Qnexis module (uses Canon light signaling ala STE2 or Canon Master Speedlite) or a FreeWire module with TTL connection between the FreeWire transmitter and the camera.

Pocket Wizards site shows here-----> http://www.pocketwizard.com/inspirations/technology/hypersync_fpsync/ That you can use hyper sync with a bunch of different flashes, not just ettl or ttl compatible flashes. I was shooting in manual mode. If it is a camera setting, does anyone know what that setting is? I tried cycling through the custom functions and there is something about max shutter speed in AV mode being 200 but nothing stating the camera itself is limited overall to 200 when something attached to the hotshoe.

I just tested my 5dII with the same setup with another plusII on the camera and set the camera's shutter speed to 500 and guess what? It fired. It did have a large black area where the mirror was in the way. So I guess it is a MiniTT1 problem or setting. I will give PW a call now.

a question- when you posted initially you indicated that you could not get the flash to sync above 200- Were you in av? if so the issue is more than likely your flash setting in the custom function....your second post indicates that you set the shutter speed to 1/500 and it synced meaning more than likely you are in tv (or manual)....- if that is the case, tv (and manual) is(are) not constrained by the same sync control options and limitations as av...this is not a pw issue--it is just how the camera operates...

you may want to reset the units to the default as you indicated that you made several adjustments which may be impacting performance.

I called the MAC group, US distributors of PW, and got the receptionist; I told her I had a technical question with the PW Mini TT1 and she transferred me. Once transferred, I spoke to Gary at tech support. I told Gary the sync problem I had and within a minute he resolved it. I was a drop down box that is set low(200) by default. Once I changed the setting(640) I was in business. I still have to tweak the offset but I can sync with a shutter speed of 500 with slight banding. I was surprised the phone rang and a live person answered. Much more surprised that I was transferred and got someone after 2 rings who fixed my problem so fast. Way to go MAC group. I'm a fan. Thanks to everyone who helped me with this!
