On July 1st we celebrated Canada Day. I snuck my 2 year old out of bed at 10pm to head out to see the fireworks. My dad has a small boat so we headed down the river to watch the fireworks from the best seats in the house on the river. I really wanted to capture this special moment he had with grandma and grandpa. My son was in awe with the fireworks. He still hasn't stopped talking about them. I really love the way I was able to capture that raw wonder in his eyes. I know there is only one of three people shots in this set but thought I would share it here. This is the montage I made for my parents. Thoughts? C&C always appreciated.
Really nice night scene and portrait of your family.
one thing that bothers me is that the top of the firework is "missing"; so the firework is not a full circle. A little cloning would make this perfect.
I loved living there for several reasons, one of which was that sunrise and sunset last for HOURS.
(Another reason was Mongo's, and yet another was Spicy Noodle House, but that's WAY off-topic.)
You've done a triptych-like arrangement, and I like the way you've set this up. The Esplanade Riel could stand on its own (and I love the deep blue you got from this most-excellent Winnipeg sunset), but the other two are stronger for being part of the group.
And yes, you did a GREAT job capturing the child-like wonder that we should all experience at least once in a while, not just as kids. I'm sure your parents love this set, and rightfully so.

Mark. This is a slap on the wrist for you buddy.
Pilles I think was stating his amazement that MikeHL complained about the firework
not being in a circle.
I still stand by what i said. I did said the the portrait is very nice, so is the night scene. however, since the top of firework is blocked by a "black rectangular shape" (not cut off by the framing), this causes a distraction to an otherwise prefect triptych.
When we view the firework, our mind "expect" to see certain things. with part of the firework "missing" (and i am not talking about framing), our mind and eyes are drawn to it and cause us to think why; this distract us from other important/beautiful elements in this triptych.
My suggestion to cloning in the missing firework would remove this distraction. how different is this suggestion to those who use PS to "prefect" portraits
Mike HL....thanks for the comment. Also, I understand what you were trying to say from the start. The missing fireworks were just an incomplete explosion I guess. I might try cloning it in to see what it looks like.
Tony....thanks for the comment. Nice to hear from a former Winnipeger. I wasn't sure if there were too many on FM that have actually heard of Winnipeg. Mongos is great as is Spicy Noodle House yes. I hear you about the bridge picture not quite fitting as well in the sequence, but my dad kept saying over and over how much he loved that view so I thought I would include it in the mix. Thanks for the complements.
Andre....thanks for the comment.
Pilles....lol...I'm not sure if you misunderstood mike or not. Oh well....thanks for taking the time to comment.
Mark....thanks for the comment. Yah...the bridge picture looks decent as a standalone....it was 1600 ISO so I'm not sure how big I could go with it.....but I've never pushed the prints on my recently aquired 5d too far yet so I'm not sure.
Canon....thanks so much!
jprezent....thanks for sounding in....I believe you are correct as well.
Tim. Always appreciate you taking time to comment. Thanks so much.
Hey I've heard of Winnipeg! I even live (here) haha. We had an exceptionally beautiful sunset yesterday and I actually thought of this thread and wished I had my camera on the drive home from work.. next time Tony! The sunset was a nice consolation for one of the most ridiculous days of crazy weather we've had in recent memory.. it was insane!
Great shots Jon, and I like the way you put them together; I'm sure your parents will be thrilled! Were you at the forks in the daytime also? I thought I saw a photographer with a 5D and 17-40L around a mini doughnut stand in the early afternoon haha (really). I was there the majority of the afternoon with my camera taking pictures of the live music.. glad it was such a lovely day!
So great to hear another Winnipeg is on FM! I was not there during the day no. We just took the boat out around 10pm or so. It was actually kinda crazy because with the river so high there was tons of trees floating down the river and it was moving fast! We were in this little aluminum boat and dodging all the trees and branches floating towards us....in the dark! Anyway....nice to hear from you and thanks so much for the comment!
