Hey there,

I was just wondering if anyone has had one of their camera's in for a CLA recently and knew about what those were running these days? I'm currently trying to see if going for the CPS Gold edition is worth it. Only 100 dollars a year but it comes with 2 Free CLA's and 30% Discount on any further Repairs, and really can't deny that 3-Day Turnaround would be pretty nice.

Definitely worth it. My records show a charge of $169 each for two 1-series bodies. That was a couple of years ago. Just recently I had two free CLA's as part of my gold membership ($100 annual), not to mention insanely fast turn-around time (camera back to me by noon day after Canon Irvine received it). Also, with two free CLA vouchers, I sent in my MKIIN and DsIII, requesting the DsIII 'recall' service as well as the CLA. I requested that if the CLA were part of the recall work, one of my vouchers be returned. It was, and I just today got back my 5D, free CLA. All in all, I'd say it's one of the best $100 business investments you can make.

What is a CLA?

I have been considering upgrading my membership. You guys are pushing me that way.

"Clean and Check," which is a basic service that cleans the sensor, viewfinder and the like, updates firmware if necessary, and checks all other basic functions of the camera body to bring everything back to factory spec.

After my last CLA my 5D came back with a much dirtier CMOS and VF than how I sent it in...

Keep in mind that the "adjust" part of CLA is narrowly defined. I sent my 1Ds2 in for a mushy-feeling WB button (the one I use for center-point focus, which had lost its clicky feeling) and included a CPS voucher. They told me that it wouldn't be covered by the voucher; the cost was the standard $170 or so, discounted down to $129 for a CPS member. The cost did include the usual things that go on for a CLA as well.

Wow thanks guys.

Yeah I think I am going to go for it. My 1D and 1Ds def could use it. And a 70 dollar difference let alone all the other things with turnaround n all I think it's totally worth it.

Will they check AF calibration as part of the CLA, or is that extra?

The notice from Canon accompanying my 1DMKIIN included this statement: "cleaned and checked all functions to factory standards." The notice from Canon accompanying my 5D stated that in addition to cleaning the sensor, "Other inspections and cleanings were carried out." I'm inclined to think that checking to see that AF calibration is within factory specifications would be part of the procedure, but the documentation is vague enough that it's hard to say for sure. What I would say is that if there's something in particular you want them to look at, you should note this when you send in your equipment. If it needs work that's not part of the basic service, I'm sure they'll let you know.
