I currently have
Intel C2D E4400
2GB dual channel OCZ ram
tonnes of HDD space
nvidea 8600GT
P5NE-SLI

would it make sense to upgrade to quadcore or I7?

I can get an I7 rig for relatively cheap and the difference would be about 300 between quad and I7

Need to render the RAWs from the 5d2 and play around with the HD video.

Anyone have experience with both rigs?

Hey, if you can get cheap, why not.

I'm quite happy with my icore 7 setup; processes raw's very quickly. Don't know about the video; I do that on my macbook and even that works quite well.

It is always useful to upgrade your hardware. If you plan on doing any video, I would say it is an absolute must. 2GB of RAM is not much in today's world, even for stills.

Consider upgrading hardware, and moving to a 64-bit version of Windows so that you can add more than 3GB of RAM.

If you use PS or LR, you will be amazed at the 64-bit version of these apps. With plenty of RAM it is a whole new experience.

I'll second that! I'm using an I7 920 with 12 GB memory, Windows 7 64 bit and an ATI 4890 card which CS4 uses as part of its display functions. Smooth and fast!

You might get more help in the Post Processing forum, where computer hardware is talked about all the time.

All you need for 5D2 is lots of RAM, I upgrade my Vista to 64bit version and got more memory and now I am fine. I would say 4G RAM is minimum for Windows is what you need.

It always makes sense to upgrade... it's always fun anyway. Get Windows 7 when it is available and get tons of ram. Otherwise, if it's still too slow for your purposes, you can upgrade your MB and processor.

If you buy a computer from most retailers between now and October, you will get a Vista machine, but with a free upgrade to Win7 when it comes out.
