p.1 #1 · Photoshop question?

I have a photo of a 45rpm record on a white backround. I need to extract the record
so that it stands alone as a jpg. without the white backround.
Could someone walk me through the steps I need to take?

You can't get a transparent background with a jpeg.

I'm not sure what you are attempting to do, but if you want the record on a separate layer, just select the white background, inverse the selection and then duplicate the layer which will be the record on its own separate layer. You can then drag it to another photo if you wish.

You do not say what software you have to use.

If Photoshop or Photoshop Elements you need to know a few things.
First its been pointed out the Jpeg file format does not support transparency File types that do are PSD, GIF and PNG. GIF and PNG are good types for the Web. GIF only supports 255 mapped colors might be good for 45rpm record image. PNG supports 8 and 16 bit color.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements background layer does not support transparency either.

If you have Elements dupe the background and turn off the visibility of the background. The background eraser tool may be a good choice tor elements to work on the duped layer.

If you have full Photoshop in the layers palette double click on the background layer and convert it to a normal layer layer 0. Then use the magic wand or menu Select>Color Range and sample all the White tones outside the 45. You may want to use refine edge. Invert this selection (shift+Ctrl+I) and click the add layer mask icon in the bottom of the layers palette. The will add a layer mask the will mask off the white background.
