p.1 #1 · Waiting for light

Last weekend I was up at LaTourell Falls an noticed that the morning light was probably going to pay a visit to the rocks at the base of the falls where DonH posted a shot from a little while back. I had about 20 minutes or so to kill until that might occur so I decided to see what else I could find.

I climbed down to the stream bed below the bridge at the base of the falls and found this scene with reflected light off of the falls directly behind.

EXIF:
Camera: Canon 5D MkII
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L
Focal Length: 43mm
Exposure: 4.0s at f/20
ISO: 100

Finally the sunlight made its appearance on the rocks. The water was mostly falling to the right of the rocks directly into the pool below but every once in a while the breezes would push some of the water over to the rocks. This shot catches one of those moments where an aerial wave of water hit the rocks for a nice show. Slower shutter speeds resulted in too much of a white curtain from the falls and obscured the rocks entirely.

Lens: Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS

C&C welcome as always and thanks for looking.

Hey Alan,

Nice work here. I like your choice in #1 in leaving some of the reflections in the water and the rocks, it gives it almost a mirror type quality. #2 is cool, nice work on timing it with the light.

Ah, yes. Brings back memories of the recent past. I like your take on the base. The subtle colors through that curtain work nicely. Looks like a good SS to me.

Nice use of the SS on the stream. I also like your take on the base of the falls. Excellent use of the sunlight there.

Alan

Very nice both are gorgeous love the light on the right hand side of the foreground in #1 just beautiful. In #2 your capture makes me feel the spray of the falls hitting me in the face, great comp and very nice shutter speed choice. Very nice work here Alan.

This is far more accurate than you might think - I had a microfiber towel in hand while I was shooting making a pass on the lens in between shots so my lens could still get the shot.

The best shooting location for the scene wasn't the best location for staying dry

Sweet pair, Alan. I like 'em both, but the 2nd is really good. Super light highlighting the gossamer nature of the falls. Fine work.

Lovely shots, Al. I prefer the first but the wispy falls are super.

I can imagine how much lens wiping you had to do to get that second image Alan but it was well worth it. Well done.

Very good. The second is amazing with all the different appearances of the water.

I'm partial to the second. The contrast between the darl gnarled rock texture dominating the lower left foreground vs the cottony soft water dominating the upper right corner makes for an interesting compositional element.

But certainly a very nice job on both!

Both are wonderful captures, Al. Terrific job of handling the lighting on both shots. And, a special thanks for enduring the spray on the last. It's a real beauty.

Cheers,
Ed
