Just for the sake of it I'll second Eric's guess. I don't know all the Canon glass after all - - though for everyone's sake I hope it's with a 180mm or such lens.

On the one hand, California Quail are notoriously skittish birds. On the other hand Tony uses a hid from time to time has has a magical knack for getting close. Add to that the fact that he's posed the question, Im going to guess short, but not 50mm. I'll go for 200mm.

Great shot Tony - as always!

Probably a little difficult to get that kind of bokeh with a 50 or 85 unless the bg was very far away. I'll go with a 180 macro or the 200, anything longer would make the thread title less effective.

Okay Tony, I'll be the first adventuresome one and go with 400 and 2x for the lack of fine detail. I'm going to be so wrong with this guess

Well, Tim came the closest. Taken with 40D and 100-400 at 400mm, with Tamron 1.4x TC stacked with Canon 2x TC.

400mm with 1.4x TC = 560mm

560mm with 2x TC = 1120mm

1120mm with 1.6x 40D crop factor = 1792mm

just comes to show that I should go with my gut instinct -

I was going to write 400mm with a TC or something....

Well done Tony

Man Tony, that's quite the rig!!! Also a couple of very sharp photos taken with it. Bean bag?

Wow Tony, quail on the mainland while you're on the Island? That is amazing sharpness for that combo.

It displays well your ability to manually focus on a difficult subject. I have used the same stacking with the same lens, but not a Tamron extender. Maybe it is time to "upgrade" from Canon accessories.

...unless of course it's at the other extreme like 400x1.4x2.0x1.6crop=1792mm

More useable result than I thought it would give. Used a monopod.
