And just to show that the spiders aren't always the predators....I was about to shoot this yellow crab spider, when this small cinnamin ant came running into the picture, grrabbed the spider, and managed to get the spider upside down. Notice the legs are still free.

By the time I could recompose for the next shot, the legs looked like they were tied at the knees. At this point, I think the spider was done.

And then along came the re-inforcements, and the two of them managed to drag the spider off.

Amazing sequence to catch with the ants and the spider. Ive seen a crab spider eating an ant but never the other way around. Superb stuff.

That's an amazing second set. I wonder what the ant used to tie the spiders legs, did you notice?

all very nice shots but the Crab Spider series is excellent - I wouldn't have expected an ant to be able to attack and kill a Crab Spider.

Excellent series!
Like Mark said, it looks like the spiders legs are tied together. At closer examination it looks like they are tied with the spiders own silk !? If thats the case, then the ant must be very, very smart.

Very interesting ant behavior, Gary. Jumper is also quite cute...no other way to describe jumpers.

The ants have caught the spider mid-molting. The material that is tying the spider up is the spider's old skin. It literally can't get away from itself.
