Is it realistic to think there are buyers who would pay over 3 grand for a lens they never saw from an unknown person who has no sales record? If there are, I'd say they're gamblers.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.
For what it's worth, I'm sure I could get more money for the lenses if I took the time and effort to post them on a site like this. But then I put myself in the buyer's place and wonder why anyone would buy expensive lenses from an unknown individual without actually seeing them or trying them out. I've sold lenses through Craigslist but always as face-to-face sales after the buyer agreed that the lenses were as advertised. I did a preliminary price check on KEH (I've had good luck buying from them) and it looks like they would offer me dramatically less money than my local dealer.
The notion of trading the two lenses for a 200 also occurred to me but the same issue applies. I would want to actually see the lens before buying it....Show more →
But people really do trust each other and would pay for high-dollar value items without seeing the actual thing ! 70-200 F2.8 L IS is bought/sold daily on FM B&S, and 300 2.8 IS is not that uncommon too, you see that every so often in here.
It comes down to how valuable your time is. For me, getting 60% from trading-in L lenses does not make much sense.
The dealer has offered a very fair trade-in value. Normally they pay way less than wholesale value. Realize they are in business to make money, so they need to buy low in order to mark it up. Like others have said, if you sell them yourself at market value you'll make more money.
The 300 2.8 IS is worth around $3200.
the 70-200 is worth around $1400
give or take a few hundred depending on condition and date code. anyways that is around $4600 bucks. The 200 f/2 IS is $4800 on BH's site (w/ rebates thru next weekend). i'd rather take my chances and sell it here or on ebay than lose out on the trade in value.
These places that sell used just hit you w/ a low ball and then sell it at a premium.
i called KEH and asked them what they would give me for a brand new never opened 1ds III, they said $3200. no thanks.
The resale prices on this forum are quite high (for a reseller)... you would probably do fine selling them here. Plus, as the seller, you generally wait till the paypal transaction is complete, so your risk is reasonable.
I tell you what - I'd pay you 60% of the new price for your 300 f2.8 right now.
I don't think the in-town guy is screwing you, but you're leaving a bunch of money on the table.

Yep, that is what they have to do. Do you think that if they gave you a great offer and sell to someone else at a wonderful reduced price...they would be in business very long?
