I don't think its as simple as replacing the top cover. The 1D MKIII camera body
is one piece magnisium alloy. They have to gut everything out of my camera and insert it back to an new shell? I doubt it. What i suspect they will do is just
offer to replace it with a clean refurb or a new one with a serial number close or newer. They'll take mine and resell it as a refurb.

I just got mine adjusted and tweeked to where i want it and its perfect. Just don't want to get a 1D MKIII with AF problems.

If you read my post... i asked if anyone had any of their equipment damaged by Canon Service. This is the first time i had anything damaged by the service dept. I'd like to hear what others experienced and how it was handled. There were a couple members here that responded with a happy endings. Helps put my mind at ease. Thanks guys!

Yes the body is a one piece magnesium alloy. But there is a top cover. Look at the lines on your 1D III you will see a seem that all the way around the top section. That is replaceable. I had mine replaced on my mark II. Mark III is almost the same.

I bubble-wrapped and taped my 1Ds. It came back with the rear lcd cut by the razor that they used to cut the bubble wrap off.

Since I'm an adult man, I started taking pictures with it. It still works just fine 6 years later...

Wow that would be soo cool if thats all it is. Don't have my 1D with me at the moment. Its sitting inside a UPS truck waiting for Canon Service to re-open after the 4th of july holiday. . And also i hope they can re-fix the problem why the camera was there in the first place before they scratched it.

BTW, that screen cover is under $6 but the gasket adds 89 cents.

That fine for you all that don't take care of your equipment, but i just happened to be an adult man who does. Plus I don't intend to take my 1D to my grave. 2 years max. I constantly upgrade. So for resale purposes its also a great idea to have a clean looking 1D3. I'm sure alot of second hand buyers will appreciate people who take care of their gear.

I think this is the first chapter of the story. Since you said that you won't settle for anything less than a full replacement I predict three more trips to canon to calibrate the replacement camera...As a camera a scratch doesn't matter, as an "investment" that you trade or sell I guess a scratch matters.

I sent a 1d with 300 F2.8 to Canon for calibration. Sent it through a authorized Canon shop. Came back with the rear LCD broken. Fellow at the shop immediately recognized the problem, apologized profusely, and sent it back to Canon. Came back good as new. A little inconvenienced by the delay, of course, but pleased with the service.

Accidents happen. Give them a chance to fix it.

It shouldn't matter if you or him takes care of your gear. It's your gear, YOU should be the one damaging it, not the Canon tech staff.

Hopefully Canon makes it right, and doesn't try to offer you like an XSi as replacement.

Yeah, second thought by the looks of the scratches. It could have been made with a box cutter. The cuts are sharp. I know how difficult it could be trying to open a bubble wrap and clear packaging tape. But that doesn't make a good reason to be careless. They should know how far to cut into without hitting the camera.
