p.1 #1 · Damage to camera by Canon Service

Just wondering if anyone had any of their equipment sent to Canon Factory Service come back damaged cosmeticlly? and what did Canon do to remedy the situation? I just had a camera body come back with scratches which wasn't there when it left.

Do the serial numbers match what you sent them?

How bad is the damage? If you are a CPS member, i would start calling Canon right away to talk about remedies.

If the scratches are not major and if the camera works fine, then just ask them
for a free service voucher. That's reasonable. Now, if the stuff doesn't work
and they damaged something critical, then ask for replacement.

But be reasonable and use good judgment.

its really not that bad but its right above the canon emblem and it broke though the paint. It bugs me seeing it. I probably wouldn't care so much if it was on the bottom.
I did call them the next day and they sent me a UPS shipping label. They told me they need to evaluate the damage and they will call me.
This is the third time this camera has been sent to them within a period of a month.

At this point i'm not going to take less than a complete camera replacement. I don't think they will gut out a MKIII and insert it into a new shell. Or try to do body work and touch up. A service voucher will not do it for me. I'm not hurting for money.... Its really frustrating. They're prompt and fast turn around time but as far as getting the problem corrected the first time is only 1 out of 8 for me.

Take it up with the service centre directly.

Still don't see what CPS has to do with this - as in the thread title.

Ask for a replacement or a substantial coupon.

I guess they wouldn't sell a new Camera with cosmetic damage so obviously it affects the value of your Camera - also it you want to sell it later - try getting some refund out of them - it's resonable.

I had a 300mm 2.8 IS come back with major scratches that were not there when I sent it in. They replaced the exterior of it for no cost.

Well let put it this way... You brought your 6 month old 911 twin turbo Porsche in for an oil change at your local Porsche Dealership Service. They deliver it to you with a 2 foot long scratch on the hood. Then they tell you its not going to affect the performance. Are you going to ask for a service voucher for 3 free oil change? The 2 foot long scratch will still be there.....

Nope. Actually those scratches may have reduced your resell value, possibly even significantly depending on the degree to which it's scratched. Call Canon and let them know, if they fail to do anything the first time keep calling. It's completely unacceptable IMO.

No offence, but I'm not sure why you are posting here(?). You need to take it up directly w/- Canon FS. When they've responded - appropriately or inadequately - then there's maybe a reason to post here. Your issue is with them, no-one here can do anything for you (except post wise-ass remarks or commiserate).

Just tell them you are a working professional with CPS that has been shooting Canon professionally for years. They will value you as a customer much much more than the average weekend joe. I wont say they will give you a new shell, but if the damage is severe enough, you maybe justified to ask for a replacement 1D3 body, while they take your old "Core" back. Thats usually how the industry works.

I had damage done before. Send it back. The camera will come back as new. If its the Canon logo they will replace the top cover.

No matter what the damage- that is unacceptable- you paid them for service and yet they damaged your equipment. On principle alone, that is just not right. I'm sure they will make it right though.

+1 Canon Service-NJ scratched the rear LCD screen on a 1Ds i sent in for sensor service awhile ago. I called them. They said return it, we'll fix it and get it back to you real fast. They did. End of story.

Issues of carelessness aside, Canon Service made it right in a matter of a few days. It's no fun to have gear inadvertently damaged, but it does happen from time to time. Canon treated me well, I believe.
