c&c welcome! I know that the foreground is rather bland. how do you get detail in the foreground in a shot like this? multiple exposures I am guessing, but Ive never tried.

Hi Nick,
There's not much town wise between Waterville and Belgrade (Oakland or maybe North Sidney) it kind of depends on the road you were on.
As for your pic, I think you just cut it off just below the tree line rather than try and pull anything out of it. Nice light BTW.

Bracketed shots blended, or multiply processed raw's, blended, would be the best way to get detail in the fg.
I'm not sure it's needed here....the beautifully layered and colored sky bracketed by dark regions works nicely for me. I might be tempted to crop some from the top and bottom, say half the dark areas, into a pano format, to really focus on the light. Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice! Ill play around with it a little and post up a new version if it looks any better. And yeah, not much in between Waterville and Belgrade haha. I was actually trying to find a lake that I had been to before to shoot a sunset, but got lost, so I frantically stopped on the side of the road to at least get some shots. Do you live in Maine?

EDIT:
I took some off of the bottom, and a little off the top so that the sun isn't directly 1/2 way up the frame (height-wise). It definitely looks a lot better in my opinion.
