Unfortunately, I did not have time to wait until sunset and the light is a bit too harsh earlier in the afternoon. With the dust from the volcanic eruption in Russia, we are getting some pretty spectacular sunsets on the west coast these days...
A nice composition here. It's too bad you couldn't have waited for some softer light. Did you try underexposing this a stop in your raw converter and then masking to protect the rock area's which are reflecting that harsher light the most?
How long is the effect of the Russian Volcano supposed to last? I know Monday we finally had some super colors down at sunset here in SoCal. But it's not been as impressive the last few days.
Here is a lower exposure as you suggested. Instead of replacing the original one, I am adding the new image here for comparison purposes. I think the second one looks better.
There you go! Now this updated version looks really sweet! Just because we sometimes have to shoot in harsh light, it doesn't mean the shot's have to always look like it...
I like the second one a lot. Such a gorgeous place! I have got a question for you: How much fire damage did you see in the Big Sur area? I have heard that several trails are closed east of the road. I would like to go there in the fall and I am interested in any locations you visited and what sort of condition they were in. Thanks for any info.
I did not have much time to weer of the highway the other day when I took these shots. At the main parking lot of the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park there were some signs about the trails over the east side of highway one being closed due to fire and storm damage. The short trail that goes west toward the wooden walkway with a nice view of the waterfall is open. However, I took this shot from a parking spot on the highway just north of the state park exit so that I can include the red poison oak in the frame.
