I am with Ute on #3. You did a great job with the foreground on that one.
As to the harsh light, one of the things you can do is shoot with a polarizer to try and knock down the reflections on rock surfaces. So you have to balance that a bit as you adjust it with the effect it will have on the sky, but using a polarizer will help. Also, be sure to watch your highlights as you shoot. Be sure to have that option enabled as you view the shot in the LCD. You will need to pull some detail out of the darker shadows when processing, but that usually will look better then having the harsh light bouncing in your face.
