In general terms I find that the D700 delivers consistently well exposed images in a variety of scenes. All Canon bodies I've used including most recently the 5D, 5D2, 1D3, 1Ds3 all seem to underpose in tricky lighting situations (especially ones where the subject of focus is slightly backlit). The D700 always seems to get perfectly exposed images. I know that the D700 metering sensor has more zones in it, so I don't if its that or if its simply a better metering algorithm.

No, I haven't. Mostly because it's NOT my 5D. I'm talking about the images ooc that the guy I work with shoots vs what my D80's metering is seeing, vs what I will be seeing when my D700 arrives. Perhaps I should have worded that better. The 5D tends to lean towards protecting highlights, rather than a more even exposure.

You seem excited about the pending arrival of the D700. Why don't you wait until it arrives and shoot the heck out of it. It doesn't matter what any other camera does, it only matters how you handle the camera in your hands. I can assure you that great photography begins with vision, not equipment.
Relax a little and enjoy what the process of making pictures.

When using spot or center weighted different brands are similar.
When using Matrix or the Canon equivalent they are modified according to the dynamic range of the sensor and matrix technology at the time of development. Because of this matrix on different Nikon bodies (D300, 700 etc) is not identical, and matrix is unlikely to be the same as the Canon equivalent.
Most high end Nikon's allow independent fine tune of matrix, spot and center weighted.

I agree with this completely. Stop analyzing the heck out of a camera you've already purchased but haven't received.
Just wait for it and actually use it; there is no point in hyper-analyzing something when you're not making a purchasing decision and you're not correcting a problem. Just relax and enjoy it.

The point is more that it's not doing you any good to be obsessively questioning this or that when its outcome will not affect you or your photography
Really, I do sympathize, a new camera is pretty exciting and you want to know everything about it - but it tends to lead to an over-analysis of your equipment when what's important is taking pictures.

You're totally missing the point. Do you think all 5D's meter the same? Do you think all photographers meters the same way??.....Er...ah....are you one of those guys that sets the camera to P ??

It's called the morning before the arrival of a new toy, get a grip. Let the moderators do the moderating. I've been a member since October 08, and have maybe made 10 threads. Just because I made 4 yesterday, doesn't mean you have to self appoint yourself a moderator and be a kill joy.
