Interesting piece. I've always envisioned a Dyson sphere as being completely enclosing the star within, though this interpretation is interesting. It'd be nice to see some details on the edges.

You're an engineer, right? Would it be physically possible (or feasible) to ever construct a full Dyson sphere? How "thick" would it have to be to resist imploding on account a star's gravity? Could it be made thinner if the diameter were wider?

I agree with you; should have titled this one the building of a Dyson Sphere. lol

As for the feasibility, it just boggles the imagination based on our current knowledge, but who's to say that if some Auto-technology, self-replicating technology that can use materieals from the Astroid belt and such could assemble such a cage. A Dyson Sphere has been postulated as a final attempt to capture as much of the remaining energy of a near spent sun for use with a very mature civilization. Who knows what our future will entail Arka.

Must be one of a binary pair. Otherwise, how would the outer surface be illuminated?

Thanks Donald. I remember first hearing about a Dyson Sphere from an episode of Star Trek TNG. Cool concept, but it boggles the imagination that such a contraption would ever be built.
