I have a FlexTT5 and then a ST-E2 on top of it in the FlexTT5 hotshoe. I can't seem to get the AF Assist Beam to trigger even though both are turned on and should work fine. The same deal with a 580EXII, even though the flash goes off, no AF Assist Beam goes off.
i have the same combination and have not had a problem with firing the st-e2 af assist since the most recent firmware update. check your firmware version as this was suppose to be addressed in the last release...also check your camera autofocus/drive custom functions to make sure the af-assist beam firing is set to enable...on the 580 you will also need to make sure the flash custom function is also set to enable beam firing...if these step don't help...on to pw support...

I have 4 of them, I'll have to try with a different one tonight... What firmware are you guys on? It said I was up to date when I did the check then.
(a) pocketwizard mini to send radio signal to remote flashes
(b) st-e2 to fire a focus assist beam.
(c) the st-e2 to NOT send a light signal when shutter is pressed. (I don't want to waste the battery or to add an additional distraction to subjects.)
On the 5d mark ii, this is set through the external speedlight control -> flash function setting -> enable flash, but that turns off both flashes. This fulfills (a) and (b) but not (c). So, everything flashes.
To do this, it seems like you would need to have an option in the pocketwizard? Or maybe it's just a custom function that I'm missing.
