Great WA zoom if you need low light. Good alternative if you don't want to spend more on 16-35/2.8. I used to have one.

Does the front optics extend while zooming?
how does the focus compare in speed to a USM?

The inner optics move, the front element does not rotate, so using a CP is entirely permissible. The speed of focus is not significantly slower than USM, at any rate this is a negligible factor in the case of photographing landscapes, as opposed to oncoming birds and the like.
