On that I agree with you - I hate the way some people make their Flash websites so unfriendly it actually turns you off them...

Saw it today in real life, what a tiny and light package...amazing!

I didn't get it - yet - but I did get the new grid for the 70cm x 70 cm softbox

YET?? So you will be getting it in the future??

This drip drip information is killing me!!! I want somebody to do a real world review that shows the pros and cons of this product.

........Although I am pretty much 99.9% sure I'm gonna get it once it hits the states.

So.........anybody else in this forum got one? A mini-review maybe? Something to tie me over before it arrives...........

I walked into the TFC and bought one today, didn't have a chance to play with it in details. If you are looking for review google British Photographic Journal

I think will be using it more often then the Ranger RX speed AS. The weight is amazing, when you charge the battery make sure the 20A fuse is connected. I spent 10mins figuring out why the battery is not charging.

...... I already linked that article on the 2nd page of this thread

In any case......can you use the battery while it's plugged and charging?

Thanks!!

Or at least can you charge the extra battery separately while the main is in use like with the Ranger RX batts?

Ditto thanks!

I thought of that since I will be getting the kit for sure. However, there might be days when I will not be in the mood of carrying the extra battery......unless of course it is really tiny. I heard somebody say that you can keep the ranger plugged in but can't sync via Skyport while in the studio....but since the skyport is built in the quadra, I figure you can keep synching while its charging.

Based on this photo I would be 100% certain that it is a yes.

It also makes it likely you could charge it whilst shooting as well.

Yes, no problem. As stated in the manual, the charging time will be somewhat longer when you are using the battery while charging.

Yes, the connector to charge the battery is located in the battery, not in the generator box.

Same here

Yes, I completely agree on this. The weight/performace ration of the Quadra is incredible good. And the integrated Skyport rocks.

BTW, the units and batteries are actually produced in Switzerland, not in Asia!

Love to - but I'm not doing that much shooting on location at this moment. For now I'll stick to the heavy innovatronix with a regular head. As soon as I do more and more stuff on location, which I'd like to do in the future, it would definitely be a good investment!

Oh crap, I just walked into a trap.

I went to my local camera store to check out a mic for my 5D2 and they were having a demo day. I have read the specs and seen the Fran Doorhorf photo of the model holding the Quadra lights and pack, but was not until I held them myself that I got to fully appreciate their size and weight.

It is no longer a case of "if" and it is now just a "when" (and "where" as I might buy them is Switzerland next month).

One sad thing for me was that Elinchrom distributer knew me when I mentioned my name. Not good being remembered by distributers when you are a amateur

Oh yeah, he said that they will have stock next week and not every unit is preordered.

Thanks Martin!!! That's mainly what I wanted to know. Now the waiting game begins. I wonder if anybody knows a place in NYC that are taking names for pre-order? Gotta start making some phone calls......

Why doesn't anyone check the manufacturer's website any more? The Skyport will sync up to 1/1000th as well. See here: www.elinchrom.com

Hmm, indeed it does say 1/1000 once I figured out where to look. Not sure where my misinformation came from but apologies for spreading it. May have been a reviewer that did not know what they were doing... irritating since this is the only reason I have PWs.

EDIT - found it, it was in the sales lit, but I was confused by the odd wording. Apologies. What I reas was

"up to 1/250 for focal plane shutter*
*speed dependent upon camera model and capabilities"

but it also says 1/1000 for an electronic shutter, in other words they seem to be repeating the camera specification, and the trigger itself is 1/1000. Darn it, I am a fool.

Frank Updated his review:

In a nutshell, nice quality light with the kit reflector. Might be too fragile to handle large modifiers - I wonder how large he is talking about...... hmmmm.......

Is that a basic kit. I thought there was a kit that featured 2 heads, a case, and an extra batt? I also thought you could get an A or S head kit?

What is the price on that thing? Just curious ....

I wish Dynalite would update their Uni JR 400. That was a great little unit for it's time Just a smallish, rock-solid monolight built like a bullet. It could take direct high voltage power from a Quantum Turbo or similar.

Takle off that small voltage regulator from a Turbo and you could use just about any battery. From the smallest SLA when you wanted, up to a 30 amp SLA when you needed to keep shooting all day. Or the DYnalite XP 1100 of cpourse.

I guess you could still do it. It is 320 Ws on DC, which is about the same as the Quadra - - less than 1/3 of a stop. Only a 2 stop adjustment range, but there are ways around that of course.

Have fun guys! I **do not** need more equipment!!

Best,
Michael
