p.8 #1 · BlackRapid Strap -- Warning!!!

Kiron Kid wrote:
I can certainly sympathise with any having their rig hit the deck. But with the older hardware, how could it possibly become unattched? It screwed into the base with a locking thumbwheel, and the plastic tube prevented the hook from disengaging, even if at funky angles. I tried it repeatedly before trusting my gear to it.

On the original connector, the plastic tube was "implemented" after at least a couple of people had their cameras disengage and fall off. The plastic tube was a stop-gap solution--the real solution was a connector that was more secure.

When they finally shipped the new connector after months of delays, some of them unscrewed themselves, and cameras hit the ground again. BlackRapid sends out an email immediately acknowledging the problem on 5/14 and promising "fixed" ones. Two weeks later, I'm still waiting for the new connector while the strap lays dormant because I have little confidence that it won't come apart.

On the newer fasteners, drop a drop of Loctite into the threaded hole, reapply the cap, and never worry about it again. I keep reading of these failures, but everyone that I know of (about 20 users) using the Black Rapid, have not had a single problem with them. Maybe it's my rockclimbing and mechanical background, but when I get a new piece of gear, I immediately inspect it for design flaws or failure points.

Just because all the people you know don't have a problem doesn't mean there isn't one. Unless you know ALL the people who own a BR strap.

[soapbox]
Unfortunately, not everyone has your background, nor expect a $50 camera strap (the BMW of camera straps) to fail so easily and unexpectedly. This diminishes any confidence whatsoever in the product especially since it's a newer company with an unproven track record. Not unlike the situation with the BMW E46 M3 engines blowing up, but fortunately, BMW has a great reputation to fall back on.

There were also design flaws with the original connector that made portrait grips uncomfortable to use. That also has since been corrected, also months later than promised.

The hub-bub over all of this could all have been easily avoided if the engineering was more sound to begin with (delay the launch several months till the design was right), proper QC and beta testing, and if the customer service were more thought out. If any of those were even on the level of their marketing expertise, this entire situation could have been avoided.

Having said all that, I like the product. I like it so much, that I've got some as gifts for my family and friends (before I read about the problems). I also want to have full confidence that it will not drop my gear.

BR does show some signs that they are improving in the CS area, I suspect they didn't anticipate the word of mouth success, or maybe they did since marketing seems to be their strongest area. Which then exposed their inexperience as industrial designers, manufacturers and web direct retailer.

If Black Rapid sent straps without the plastic tubing, I stand corrected and apologize. I was not aware of this. I would never trust that Fastener without a fail-safe device. Kind of like back-clipping on a 5.12 runout lead...

That RRS plate is nice. I'm invested in some manfrotto gear, so that's less of an option for me. But if I had a RRS plate, I'd go that route for sure!

Also, the "debacle" price wasn't so bad for me because I didn't bother with their complete package. I just bought the two connector parts. From there it was only a bucks more for some 1" webbing and 3mm cord.

BTW, this looks like a possibly shorter, slightly less bulky version that could be used as a removable leash. I might give these a try, not sure...

Alright, it's official. I now have these, and they work as the best "leash" yet as far as I'm concerned. It could be just a few mm longer, and yes, it is a bit bulkier than the cleanness of having nothing at all, but it works, it's not that bulky, it's easily attached, it's bomber, and it's unclippable in a second.

Now, of course I'm referencing only those who are inclined to roll with a "leash" in the first place. I'm sure most people won't need one. Now, with this setup, for me personally, it gives me a super easy setup with two additional things I really like:

(1) Complete reassurance that I'm totally "backed up," there's no way my sh!t is hitting the ground, period, end of story. With the leash, I'm protected from not only the risks of failure in the ConnectR2, FastenR2, or any other DIY rig you may have, but I'm also protected from any of that stuff unclipping or unscrewing itself, or even from the socket itself somehow failing. Call me paranoid, but... Just saying...

(2) Because of #1 above, I'm willing to use my manfrotto quick release plate (which obviously wasn't directly designed to be loaded like this) in lieu of the FastenR2, which means I can roll with really easy on/off connectivity to my monopod or tripod. Not only that, I can stay connected with the leash if I want to (or just as easily not by quickly unclipping the leash). This option is kind of nice for anyone using monopods because you can go straight from the sling to the monopod and still stay connected as a safety from dropping the whole rig/cam/monopod, which would normally be the case if you were using a non-sling-based strap (you'd have the safety of a "normal" strap around your neck).

Anyway, I just wanted to give an update for anyone who might want to go in this direction. Again, it's a hair tighter than I'd like, but it fully works. I'll upload a pic if I have time.

Also, for those with a DIY mindset, it should be easy using a combination of things people are doing in this thread to make a pretty sweet sling for as cheap or expensive as they wanted. First, get your primary single point of attachment to the camera by using a FastenR2 or by using a manfrotto quick release plate or equivalent (or RRS+FastenR2 as discussed above). Second get your attachment to the sling with either a ConnectR2 or a cheaper and quite possibly more bomber MASH CLIP (see previous posts). From there, you need a sling. I've been using about a dollar's worth of 1" tubular webbing tied with a simple overhand knot, and it's been pretty comfortable on its own, even more comfortable with a pad added, it's super packable and not bulky like some straps, has a great surface for the sling hardware to easily slip along, and believe it or not, I kind of like using the knot as a stopper of sorts. But any continuous 1" wide strap with or without padding would work. You could also use a LadderLock or sew up a TriGlide with some webbing to get rid of the knot and/or make it adjustable if you wanted to go even more DIY. Then lastly, for those who just want a backup, or are worried about hardware coming loose or unscrewing, or for those using something a little more sketchy like the manfrotto quick release plate, you can for only a few bucks more make a leash out of the optitech fasteners (shown above). I've got to think you could go the "quick release plate / mash clip / leash / webbing" route for under $10 at this point (if you already have a plate).

Lots of options and variations in there for everyone, and thanks for the help, heh...

UPDATE: Here's a photo of the new and improved leash (again, please excuse the iphone pic):

I have not and I have not received reply to my inquiry sent week or so ago either. I am starting to fume.

I received replacement CR-2's that were completely glued together. Meaning they could no longer swivel. Then, without further complaint, I received a second pair of CR-2's that swiveled freely. I have not been able to get them to come apart like my original set did, but I still have a hard time trusting them.

Same here, I have not receive any replies on my replacement nor the replacement itself. Very frustrating company. I got the Uni Loop from Op Tech. Great safety measures for this strap.

hmm... is anyone still waiting on their replacement CR-2's like me?
this is definitely frustrating.

I'm interested in purchasing those OpTech System Connectors, but curious about what the product page means by (Set of 2). Are the 2 pieces (male and female) part of 1 set?

I have sent their customer service second e-mail last night inquiring on the status. As of now no reply yet. So much about customer service.

What they need is some competition.
