That RRS plate is nice. I'm invested in some manfrotto gear, so that's less of an option for me. But if I had a RRS plate, I'd go that route for sure!
Also, the "debacle" price wasn't so bad for me because I didn't bother with their complete package. I just bought the two connector parts. From there it was only a bucks more for some 1" webbing and 3mm cord.
BTW, this looks like a possibly shorter, slightly less bulky version that could be used as a removable leash. I might give these a try, not sure...

Alright, it's official. I now have these, and they work as the best "leash" yet as far as I'm concerned. It could be just a few mm longer, and yes, it is a bit bulkier than the cleanness of having nothing at all, but it works, it's not that bulky, it's easily attached, it's bomber, and it's unclippable in a second.
Now, of course I'm referencing only those who are inclined to roll with a "leash" in the first place. I'm sure most people won't need one. Now, with this setup, for me personally, it gives me a super easy setup with two additional things I really like:
(1) Complete reassurance that I'm totally "backed up," there's no way my sh!t is hitting the ground, period, end of story. With the leash, I'm protected from not only the risks of failure in the ConnectR2, FastenR2, or any other DIY rig you may have, but I'm also protected from any of that stuff unclipping or unscrewing itself, or even from the socket itself somehow failing. Call me paranoid, but... Just saying...
(2) Because of #1 above, I'm willing to use my manfrotto quick release plate (which obviously wasn't directly designed to be loaded like this) in lieu of the FastenR2, which means I can roll with really easy on/off connectivity to my monopod or tripod. Not only that, I can stay connected with the leash if I want to (or just as easily not by quickly unclipping the leash). This option is kind of nice for anyone using monopods because you can go straight from the sling to the monopod and still stay connected as a safety from dropping the whole rig/cam/monopod, which would normally be the case if you were using a non-sling-based strap (you'd have the safety of a "normal" strap around your neck).
Anyway, I just wanted to give an update for anyone who might want to go in this direction. Again, it's a hair tighter than I'd like, but it fully works. I'll upload a pic if I have time.
Also, for those with a DIY mindset, it should be easy using a combination of things people are doing in this thread to make a pretty sweet sling for as cheap or expensive as they wanted. First, get your primary single point of attachment to the camera by using a FastenR2 or by using a manfrotto quick release plate or equivalent (or RRS+FastenR2 as discussed above). Second get your attachment to the sling with either a ConnectR2 or a cheaper and quite possibly more bomber MASH CLIP (see previous posts). From there, you need a sling. I've been using about a dollar's worth of 1" tubular webbing tied with a simple overhand knot, and it's been pretty comfortable on its own, even more comfortable with a pad added, it's super packable and not bulky like some straps, has a great surface for the sling hardware to easily slip along, and believe it or not, I kind of like using the knot as a stopper of sorts. But any continuous 1" wide strap with or without padding would work. You could also use a LadderLock or sew up a TriGlide with some webbing to get rid of the knot and/or make it adjustable if you wanted to go even more DIY. Then lastly, for those who just want a backup, or are worried about hardware coming loose or unscrewing, or for those using something a little more sketchy like the manfrotto quick release plate, you can for only a few bucks more make a leash out of the optitech fasteners (shown above). I've got to think you could go the "quick release plate / mash clip / leash / webbing" route for under $10 at this point (if you already have a plate).
Lots of options and variations in there for everyone, and thanks for the help, heh...
UPDATE: Here's a photo of the new and improved leash (again, please excuse the iphone pic):
