Hey guys.
Im thinking about a 3rd backup cam for our weddings and debating on a 40D or a 50D. The prices are identical, and the 50D seems very contraversial. Do any of you guys has some wedding samples using the 50D I can check out? I'd rather see real-worl samples and suggestions rather than rely on Dpreview, etc. Thanks in advance.
The web-sized samples anyone posts here won't look any different than anything from a 20D,30D, or 40D. If you blow things up to 100% - which is rather pointless more often than not - then you might notice a difference.
To get down to the core of your question, the 40D is the wiser buy between these two cameras. The 50D's extra resolution needs *very* ideal situations for it to become apparent - think studio settings. When shooting at high ISO, or moving subjects at large apertures, or almost anything else you might encounter at at wedding, the extra resolution goes to waste by turning into mush and blur.
So, with resolution being a wash, the functional differences between the 40D and the 50D are minimal. My advice would be to save some cash and get the 40D - especially if its going to be used as a third body backup.

If this is going to be a 3rd backup why not buy a 30D instead? You get the slightly more sensitive sensor (canon's sensors prior to the 40D were underspecd... ISO 1600 was really ISO2000 and spend the rest of the cash elsewhere.
If it's either the 40D or the 50D and they're really the same price (surprising) then I would personally go for the 50D.
Go for the 50D...I have the 50 and the 40D. The 50D, in sRAW1 blows away the 40D. 7.1 mp is plenty. ISO 2500 sRAW1 on the 50D looks about like full res ISO 1250 on the 40D.
The screen alone is worth the change. You can actually check for sharp focus on eyes.
